Sociology Paper #1
I remember watching and reading Super Size Me in middle school and Food INC. as well in high school. My initial reaction to Super Size Me was disgust. I found the way they treated chickens and how McDonald’s made their food disgusting. Just prior to viewing Super Size Me, I was already visiting fast food places like McDonald’s less frequently and after viewing Super Size Me I rarely ate at a fast food place. My visits to fast food places decreased at a rate to around once a year. However, as time passed my visits to fast food places slowly increased and by sophomore to junior year in high school I actually started to enjoy eating fast food again. By the time I saw Food INC around sophomore to junior year, I was desensitized to eating fast food because of the good taste, the speed, and especially the cheap prices. When I viewed Food INC for the first time in high school, I found it quite boring because I rationalized a belief that “food is food” so I didn’t care at all how food is made as long as it could fill my stomach.
Coincidentally, before my second viewing of Food INC in our first sociology class, I was in a renaissance of eating healthier. I wanted to lose some weight and maintain that healthier weight not by using a temporary diet but by changing my lifestyle. I decided to cut out processed foods as much as possible. I was also interested in the organic option over the conventional options at a Safeway for example so I did my research on organic food. While there isn’t hard conclusive evidence that non-organic food is surely harmful to the body, there were some interesting correlations with non-organic food and negative effects. Upon further research and article reading, I read that some foods should definitely be eaten organic versus food that doesn’t have to be eaten organically. For example fruits or vegetables with a thick covering like pineapple will be less affected by pesticides because the hard “shell” prevents the pesticides from getting to the edible parts. However, foods where you also eat the skin like apple should be eaten organically because one is eating where the pesticide has been sprayed on. I also read that meats don’t necessarily needed to be eaten organically because proper cooking kills the antibiotics used in meat. I personally would only eat certain vegetables and fruits organic because going completely organic is quite expensive. With this new knowledge of eating healthier, I understood Food INC very well during my second viewing. However, at first I felt like the movie was a big promotion to promote organic food because from what I read not everything needs to be eaten organically, but what I learned appreciated most from this movie was how sanitary organic farms were. Yes organic food may not necessarily be better for you, but the dirty work environments of non-organic farms and how they mistreat their workers have caused illnesses and job loss. For that reason only which I just learned, I support organic food. Not so much that organic is healthier for you; I’m starting to believe that organic is healthier is a placebo effect promoted by the organic companies. To really eat healthier, cutting out processed foods is the key, and not necessarily eating everything organic in my opinion.

I gained different knowledge about organic food along with the benefits of it. Non-organic food contain pesticides and plenty of food additives. 100% Organic is made with none of that it’s made all naturally so for example its made with no food supplements and no pesticides. In the food and recipes feature stories section John Reganold, a professor of soil science at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, states, "If you 're talking about pesticides, the evidence is pretty conclusive. Your chances of getting pesticide residues are much less with organic food.” For example in a regular industrial farm where they plant crops they use pesticides along with food supplements for it to grow faster and for it to taste better. Now in organic farming where they grow crops or raise animals there are no pesticides or food supplements used in to make them grow faster, it was…

There are comparatively few rules to violate, and people are socialized into long standing traditions in a communal society. Because associated societies are complex, they require many laws and rules. Also, they are impersonal, and tradition is not adequate to prevent deviance. However, many associational societies are diverse, and the mix of ethnicities, language, and regional differences requires coordination, which in turn requires laws and rules. The focus in an associational society is on the offender when determining suitable punishment, while command societies pay more attention to the victim. This is why communal societies are the most likely to use a restorative rationale in determining punishment.…

    1. The childhood anecdote from the beginning of the chapter shows that racial prejudices and differences are not inborn and they are a result of the way that society shaped a persons image of the different races. Based on this assumption, it is safe to believe that a non-white three year old would be likely to bring home a white “baby sister” because the three year old wouldn’t realize that there is a difference. White people are put at an advantage with an “invisible knapsack of privileges”.…

Gang violence has been causing problems in America since at least the latter half of the 20th century. Many cities are subject to have large gangs and this by no means is a good thing. To name a few cities New York, Los Angeles, and Detroit have been known to be grounds for all different sorts of gangs. Whether it is a biker gang such as the Hells Angels, or an African American street gang such as the Bloods or Crips, all across America we are seeing the concerns over crime rate increase while the crime and murder rate have gone down. Chicago is one of the biggest cities to have been prominent on recent increase in gang violence. Most people blame inner-city violence in Chicago on the existence of gangs. But I think that the murder rate remains high in Chicago because of the amount of illegal firearms in circulation. Thus, I hypothesize that a decrease in the number of illegal weapons will result in a decrease in the murder rate. Criminals with no prior gun experience that participate in violent gang activities have caused the murder rate to increase twenty five percent in the last year (Venkatesh, 2012).…

In Cernansky’s article, she also stated, “A 2012 study found no real difference between organic and conventional food in terms of nutrition. Its findings appeared in the Annals of Internal Medicine” (6). This evidence proves that with no real difference in nutritional value in the comparison between the two, the logic should be that they are the same price, instead of being vastly different. Customers at a grocery store should not need to pay extra money, just for a label that states something is better for one’s body, when in comparison with the opposite, being conventional, nothing is greater or less. Lisa Herzig, an associate professor of nutrition at Fresno State, reported to David Lazarus, “Buying organic does not necessarily mean there’s more health and nutrition benefits. The pesticide content will be higher with conventional produce, but it’s still at safe levels” (Lazarus 23). This quote shows that even when the amount of the price is completely off for both items, the non-safe thoughts…
