Sodium Vs Lithium Research Paper
Sodium is a metal from group 1 of the periodic table, this is a metal which reacts when it needs to, this metal has a low melting and boiling point, also it is very dense, this shows that when reacting with other substances it will be different and this is because it will not react the same the whole time. The other thing is that this elements electron configuration is 11 which is quite low when comparing them to the other elements in the periodic table. However this metal is more reactive than lithium which is a good thing because it is quite strong. This element has three main energy levels and the outer shell only has one election and this is higher than lithium however potassium is stronger. This is known as a soft metal and is a solid, it can react in acids but is a very slow reactant.
This is placed in group 1 of the periodic table and this is because of the way it reacts when it is in a solution, this is a metal which doesn’t react too quickly and this is because of its properties and has 11 ionic bonds, this shows that it isn’t that strong but when it is placed in a reaction it does take its time and this can be because of its low density

This is also a very active metal compared to sodium and this is because when magnesium gets reacted it changes however when it is placed in cold water it reacts really slowly this can be because it doesn’t have a lot of space in where it can break up the bonds which need to be broken up. When it is in hot water it can easily be broken up and it reacts much more quickly. The electron configuration for magnesium is 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 and this is because its atomic number is 12, it has 12 ionic bonds and they are placed in the different shells in which the nucleus orbits this element, on its outer shell there are 2 bonds and this shows that it is stronger than sodium because sodium only has

Anhydrous sodium sulfate was added to the filtered organic solution to absorb excess water. Although water has a higher affinity towards sodium sulfate than cyclohexanol, excess anhydrous sodium sulfate may lead to the absorption of cyclohexane and thus loss of product. Anhydrous sodium sulfate absorbs water due to its polarity and therefore may also absorb cyclohexanol because of its polar O-H bond. If too much anhydrous sodium sulfate was added to the solution, part of the product would be absorbed too and thus a yield of less than 100% would be produced.…

    2. The reactivity of the metal increases with each period it goes down. Magnesium is the least reactive and is in the third period with an atomic number of 12. Calcium is slightly more reactive being in the fourth period and having an atomic number of 20. Barium is the most reactive because it is in the sixth period and it has an atomic number of 56. So the farther down in the group they go the more reactive they are.…

It came about because Sodium is a positively charged ion, and it has one electron in its outermost shell. Chlorine, and negatively charged ion it has seven electrons in its outermost shell. So then sodium transfers its one electron to the chlorine, because for sodium to have a full shell it would need to have seven more electrons to make a complete shell.…

This experiment tested the theory that the elements in the periodic table are arranged in a manner in which the elements of a group share similar chemical properties. The elements we used were the ones from the alkaline earth metal group. These elements tend to form 2+ cations and are very reactive. We also compared these elements to that of lead because lead also forms a 2+ cation. We used the chemical property of solubility to observe the periodic trends of the alkaline earth metals. As a general rule, reactivity increases as you move down a group in the periodic table. This means in regards to solubility that the more you farther you move down the group the more insoluble the element is when combined with hydroxides, chlorides, bromides, iodides, sulfates, carbonates, and oxalates. My results were consistent with this theory in that the mixtures went from no reaction to forming a precipitate or from forming a light precipitate to a heavy one as the elements moved down the periodic…
