Soft Power And The Mauryan Empire
Soft power helped leaders of the Mauryan Empire gain legitimacy because they encouraged strong morals in their people. The Mauryan Empire was primarily composed of India and other parts of South Asia and was founded by Chandragupta around 322 BCE. Chandragupta proceeded to lead the empire by using Arthasastra. The Arthasastra was a written guidebook about how to properly lead an empire. and one requirement of the Arthasastra was for a King to provide for the people who were unable to provide for themselves, such as the elderly, the homeless, the ill, and the pregnant women and their children. The differences between the Han and Gupta/Mauryan had been largely attributed to the main sense of political organization when keeping a civilization running. Han China was more organized due to a solid bureaucracy as a solid political system where all people would be told what’s what so there wouldn’t be confusion as to where ideas and laws were going. India on the other hand had regionalism which could go differently for each political system that would be developed. This political method appeared to be the best option for India since the Geography would not permit them a more central and organized political system such as the one that Han China had created.…

The classical empires experienced periods of great power by centralization of power and establishing belief systems to maintain power over their empire. This is true for both Han China and Mauryan India. Both of these classical empires were very successful in the ancient world because they were able to expand and create strong political policies to keep their empires strong and stable. While both Han China and Mauryan/Gupta India built distinct political structure to ensure that their officials were implementing their policies, Han China and Mauryan India used belief systems as techniques to ensure that there was order in their empires.…

Chua discusses the Achaemenid Empire in Chapter One. Lying in present-day Iraq, the Achaemenid Empire was the earliest hyper-power of the world, ruling as many as 42 million people. The story of the Achaemenid began with Cyrus the Great. Cyrus, remarkably complete in religious tolerance, not only spiritually freed people, but also restored them. Cyrus did not establish new kingdoms through conquering by strength, but instead, he did so by respecting the people and their freedom and human rights. Cyrus serves as a prime example of ruling people by serving them rather than coercing them through fear and force.…

Asoka was one of the greatest rulers of ancient India. He was the grandson of Chandragupta Maurya of Magadha who established the first Indian empire. Chandragupta reigned for twenty-four years before relinquishing his throne in favor of his son, Bundusara (Asoka's father), who left no noticeable mark upon the empire. My thesis would be that Asoka was an enlightened ruler and not a ruthless conqueror.…

The Romans and Gupta’s emperor had the most control in their government because they did not use a large bureaucracy. The rulers in the Roman and Gupta Empire told their people their power was given to them by the gods so everyone would follow their rule. But the Gupta was not largely centralized so their emperor did not control almost all the power. Unlike Caesar Augustus and his successors who held almost all the power in the empire. The Roman emperors would put their faces on the coins or built statues of them all over the empire to promote their power so everyone followed them.…

Having a strong ruler is key to a successful empire. A strong ruler is a sign of a strong empire, and if you have a weak leader who makes bad decisions when your empire will most likely crumble. Many empires such as Carolingian, the Qin Dynasty, Egypt, and so many more thrived because of their strong leaders, even if that time of prosperity doesn't always last long. One great and powerful leader that lead his empire to peace was Augustus. "The era of Augustus’ reign was a golden age in every respect. " (Augustus) A strong leader often brings prosperity which causes the citizens to be more patriotic. This patriotism helps strengthen the empire's military might because more people would be willing to fight for the empire that they…

“It is better to be defeated standing for high principle than to run by committing subterfuge,”1 is a quote by Grover Cleveland, which personifies his morals, and that he will never compromise them just for victory. Because of this and other reasons Grover Cleveland is the greatest president that America can boast when nerds get together to talk about great leaders in history. Unfortunately, except among Libertarians, Grover Cleveland is only known today for being the only president to serve two non-consecutive terms. He was born in New York to Puritan Parents. He did later leave the church, but the values instilled in the former president by his parent never left him. Later he became the mayor of Buffalo, and then, due to his impressive character, governor of New York. After this achievement…

Within Classical Indian and Chinese civilizations, they both began with expansions due to military conquests. The Mauryan rulers depended heavily on their large armies, more so than the Guptas. They used their large armies to forcefully unify regions of India, and defeat opposing army generals. The Han expansion included military conquests of chinese territory as well of certain regions of the Silk Road. Both Chinese and Indian dynasties were funded by generals. The desire of territorial expansion was…

In ancient time, in order to expand their empires and accumulate properties, many successful emperors or leaders usually conquered other places through strong military forces. Someone then concludes that “the most successful ancient empires were able to maintain hegemony over conquered peoples with little or no thought to anything besides military power.” However, a successful emperor, such as Alexander the Great, Ashoka, and Han Wudi, did not gain the political control of the conquered regions through military force, but adopted more complicated and efficient methods such as controlling or eliciting peoples’s thoughts through education, making strict laws and assimilation—adapting cultures of conquered areas as well as diffusing its own culture…

Before imperialism, there were often conflicts between these empires, and between other smaller towns and tribes. To the east of the Ghana Kingdom, the Mali Empire was growing and this caused conflicts. After fights and disputes between these neighboring territories, the Mali Empire took over the Ghana Kingdom. Fights over who should take over the throne and the rebellion by the Fulani people in the Mali Empire led to the rise of the Songhai Empire. This great empire was led by the Royal Family Sonni, from the 13th century all the way through the 15th century. All three of these great empires had large armies. The leaders of these empires were often hungry for more land, and this caused wars and conflicts. The Songhai Empire had a great army.
