SCENE #1: Creep
The very first song, “Creep” by Radiohead was chosen by our group to start off the playlist because we thought this song could broadly show Holden Caulfield’s character. The most important part about this song is the lyrics. This song is about a person who doesn’t feel like he is very special, and that he does not fit in anywhere. “But I’m a creep. I’m a weirdo.” Although Holden never really talks about how he thinks of himself, he regards himself lowly when he talks about Phoebe or Allie. He respect them because they’re what he thinks are good kids. Because of past experiences, and Holden’s distant personality, people think he’s weird. Holden tries not to let that get to him, but deep down, he knows it too. He knows that he can be different from the others, and the way he think contrasts many of the same age. “What the hell am I doing here? I don’t belong here.” This part of the lyrics shows how Holden doesn’t feel like he fits in anywhere. He has been to more than five different schools—all where he couldn’t find a single place to fit in to. In his opinion, he isn’t accepted anywhere, but he doesn’t easily accept others, either. This is the reason for Holden’s loneliness, because he has changed his surroundings (his school) so many times, he’s always away from his family members, and he can’t open up to anyone. The soft sounds of the guitar show these little worries and insecurities hidden inside Holden’s mind. “Creep” is the first song chosen in our playlist as a way to show the internal emotions of Holden, and what the story is about: Holden trying to find a fitting place as he wanders New York, and the complicated thoughts of a teenager, not yet an adult, but not a child anymore.
SCENE #2: Thinkin’ About You
The song isn’t the original version, but a remix. The beginning part of the song is a mash of two parts of the songs together to represent the mix of feelings he has. Holden thinks about Jane Gallagher and can’t stop
