Soldiers Re-Enlistment
The time for the nine-month enlistment is up. It is time for the soldiers to either re-enlist and continue to fight of their country, or they may choose not to re-enlist and go back to their family. This is the fight for independence, the American Revolution in its prime. Whether the soldiers choose to either re-enlist or not re-enlist heavily impacts this war. The Continental army has seen many hard times and choosing to re-enlist requires much more strength and courage than those who chose not to re-enlist. However, if the soldiers re-enlist, they would have more strength in numbers as well as more benefits while fighting against Britain.     The leadership of the army knew this would be the case, which is the main reason that the terms of enlistment were so short during the war unlike the minimal 8 years contract in the army now. Although the life in the army improved the soldiers had to endure such environment as, “shivering with cold upon bare floors without a blanket to cover them, calling for fire, for water, for suitable food, and for medicines- calling in vain.” Having to withstand all these misfortune, the soldiers were anything but humble in their conception of rights.     Since the soldiers were living in such bad conditions I would want to leave as soon as possible for the fear that I would become ill and die. In December of 1777 there were 12,000 soldiers arriving at Valley Forge, but in February of 1778 George Washington left with an army of only 8,000(Doc A). According to Dr.Waldo in (Doc C) the army began to grow “sickly” from the fatigues. Some of the most common diseases were Smallpox, Influenza, Typhus, and Pneumonia. Most troops were treated for Smallpox, but were unable to work because they had to be quarantined. December 23,1777 and 2,898 are reported sick or unable to work, and by February 1,1778, 3,989 are reported sick or unable to work. Illness was the main cause of death, but 6,300 soldiers were KIA, killed in action, and 8,500 died as POW, prisoners of war.
