A wide array of interactions among plants, animals, and microorganisms occurs in nature. Some of these relationships are characterized by a close physical association among species that continues for a large period of the life cycle. In 1879 German botanist Heinrich Anton de Bary coined the term "symbiosis" to describe these relationships, meaning the living together of different species of organisms. Many people associate symbiosis with mutualism, interactions that are beneficial to the growth, survival, and/or reproduction of both interacting species. But symbiotic interactions also include commensalism (one species receives benefit from the association and the other is unaffected), amensalism (one species is harmed, with no effect on the other), and parasitism. An example of commensalism is found in the anemone fish, which gains protection from living among the poisonous tentacles of the sea anemone, but offers no known benefit to its host.…

Chicago is not one of the best places to live because of the rising crime rate. Recent statistics have shown that more people are leaving the city to move to Indiana because of this. If the crime rate were lower probably people would still stay in Chicago. Al Capone once said “In this town murders a form of entertainment” which means that Chicago has had a long history of crime and the numbers of crime that have taking place in Chicago are still on the rise. Some people might say Chicago is one of the best places to live because it’s a beautiful place to live but Chicago has experienced some of the worst crimes in history. For instance the Jeffery Dahmer and John Wayne Gacy murders happened here. There are good neighborhoods in Chicago and I live on the Northside and crime doesn’t discriminate against anyone. I did have a crime against me was committed and my viewpoint has change on Chicago being a safe place to live.…

Imagine a rainy day with dark clouds, dreary skies, and nearly flooded streets. These days feel miserable to an eight year old who loves to explore the outdoors and running around in the backyard. About nine years ago on a day filled with theses depressing features, I wandered about my basement searching for something to do in order the combat eternal boredom. I read a book, played on our Wii console, watched TV, and completed a puzzle, but I still felt restless and unentertained. Having exhausted all possible options, I finally spotted the treadmill resting near the far wall of the room. Without actually intending to run on the machine, I jumped onto the belt and placed my hand on the power dial larger than my miniature, childlike hand. Unaware that my mother had recently plugged the treadmill into the outlet,…
