The Problem
Background of the Study
As the homes are piled up with garbage or “junk” because of beverage containers, tableware, papers, plastics, sporting goods and on and on this throwaways did not just go into the dump but also they litter it in public places. Not only household but also firm that contribute to waste. This is just one of the problems in the Philippines.
Much has been written about the problems of junk in Manila and other urban areas in our country. Junks or garbage that is thrown on the river causes clogging and also leads to contamination of the water. These materials that are also thrown in public places are not pleasing to the eyes and not only that it emits bad odors because it contains air pollutants. Many people are not aware of what will be the future effects of this pollutant in our society. That is why our government officials implemented the Republic Act 9003 (Ecological Solid Waste Management of 2001).
Republic Act 9003 ( Ecological Solid Management Act of 2001) which shall ensure the proper protection of the environment especially health, utilize environmentally sound methods set guidelines and targets for solid waste avoidance and volume reduction through source reduction and waste minimization measures, ensuring the proper segregation through source reduction and waste minimization measures, ensuring the proper segregation and collection, transport, storage, treatment and disposal of solid waste it also promotes to conservation techniques of resources. Republic Act 9003 was implemented at schools and other municipalities but still the people are not following this regulation.
Environmentalists also stresses that the Republic Act should be in best practice so that we can avoid the emission of greenhouse gasses that causes global warming. According to studies landfills and open dumps accounts for 34 percent of human-related methane emissions to the atmosphere.
The Republic Act also generally concerns with the health of individual living in the society against diseases brought by too much waste in the environment. To reduce the pollution by means of recycling all the recyclable materials. Through the implementation of waste collection and segregation, we will make the community of one Barangay be aware about the importance, and they will become more conscious and informative regarding environmental issues. And also, they will put more attention especially on their moral values so that they will understand more about the programs implemented, especially on the solid waste management that concern us the most.
Since waste segregation and collection is proven to be beneficial for the people living in the society, the people in Barangay San Isidro, Daet, Camarines Norte is the subject of this research it is for the reason that this Barangay has the problems when it comes to proper disposal of garbage.
Barangay San Isidro, Daet, Camarines Norte has a total population of 2084. It has a geographical location of more or less 2 kilometers from Centro/ Poblacion located southeast from the town proper bounded by the following Barangays: North: Barangay 8 and Gubat Daet Camarines Norte; South: Barangay Mambalite and Cobangbang Daet Camarines Norte; East: Barangay 1 and Cobangbang Daet, Camarines Norte. The Barangay has a total land area of 608.8 hectares.
There are beautiful sceneries in this area but very few appreciate it. And instead of making the Barangay restore its natural beauty, people often times throw their garbage on public places especially on river.
The primary concern of this study is to recommend the implementation of waste collection and segregation program to reduce the quantities of the waste materials produce by the people thus avoiding the necessity to treat and dispose such materials.

What is the current status when it comes to awareness about waste segregation and collection in Barangay San Isidro, Daet, Camarines Norte? 3. What are the process to be done to implement waste collection and segregation in Barangay San Isidro, Daet, Camarines Norte? 4. What are the strategies in implementing the waste collection and segregation in Barangay San Isidro, Daet, Camarines Norte?

Significance of the Study
This study mainly institutes and provides better understanding about the Implementation of Waste Collection and Segregation in chosen Barangay of Daet, Camarines Norte. The information and findings gathered in this study could be utilized by:
People in the Community- The study will provide various information about the Waste Management (R.A. 9003) regarding waste collection and segregation in the Barangay. It will motivate the Barangay Community to have enough understanding about the cleanliness and healthy surrounding’s. Initially, it creates awareness about the importance of having a garbage-free Barangay. Through the results of the study, the proper collection and segregation are implemented in order to improve their attitudes in compliance of waste management.
Public Officials- This study will serve as a key to disseminate the programs of the Barangay regarding the waste management specifically the Waste Collection and Segregation.
Future Researchers- This study serves as a great help for the researchers who find it very interesting to further explore more regarding waste collection and segregation. This will also serve as a reliable source of research-based information that they can utilize for any other research topics. This may also serve as a pattern which can be used for the future researchers with similar cases. And they could explore more about the implementation of waste collection and segregation in other Barangay and community setting.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is conducted specifically for the Implementation of waste collection and segregation at Barangay San Isidro, Daet, Camarines Norte. This study is limited to the Barangay’s who has not yet implemented the proper segregation and collection of garbage.
This study might also be used as a tool to improve the campaign of the government about the waste management (R.A. 9003) in Barangay San Isidro, Daet, Camarines Norte and it will also help to promote the importance of healthy environment to every community.
Definition of Terms Agricultural waste – shall refer to waste generated from planting or harvesting of crops, trimming or pruning of plants and waste from farms or fields.
Collection- It refers to the removing of solid waste which provides proper segregation of waste and recyclable waste.
Disposal – Shall refer to the discharge, deposit. Leaking or placing of any solid waste into or in any land shall be the responsibility of the local government of Daet.
Environment- Consists of particular natural surroundings in which you live or exist, considered in relation to their physical characteristics or weather condition.
Material Recovery Facility (MRF) –– includes a solid waste transfer station or sorting station, drop-off center, a composting facility, and a recycling facility.
Recyclable materials – Shall refers to any waste material retrieved from the waste stream and free from contamination that can still converted into sustainable use or for other purposes.
Recycling- the treatment of the waste materials through a process of making the sustainable for the beneficial used. It refers to making use of solid waste such as, plastics, papers, and cans for waste minimization.
Republic Act 9003 – it refers to a low on the systematic and comprehensive solid waste management programs. In this study it is the statutes regarding solid waste management.
Segregation – Shall refers to the solid waste management practice of separating different materials found in solid waste in order to promote recycling and re-use of resources and to reduce the volume of waste for collection and disposal.
Solid waste management-shall refer to the discipline associated with the control of generation, storage, collection, transfer and transport, processing, and disposal of solid wastes in a manner that is in accord with the best principles of public health, economics, engineering, conservation, aesthetics, and other environmental considerations, and that is also responsive to public attitudes.
Solid waste – It refers to discarded household materials such as plastics, papers, leftover foods and also the street sweepings, construction debris and agricultural waste and other nonhazardous or not toxic waste.
Waste collection and transport- it refers to the transport of garbage from household to dumpsite or treatment facility. In this study it is the proper waste transportation of segregated waste from Barangay San Isidro, Daet, Camarines Norte to dumpsite .
Waste segregation – It is the process of dividing garbage and waste production an effect to reduce, reuse and recycle material.
