Within the capital of Asuncion, Paraguay lays the countries largest waste disposal site called Cateura. The metropolitan area of Asuncion has rapidly grown in urban population and development over the past 40 years, but not in a well-planned manner. As such, this has created environmentally sensitive areas associated with negative impacts such as inadequate storm water drainage systems, and solid waste collection and disposal. This affects the water supply and sanitation infrastructure and services, as well as the livelihood of its inhabitants. This background paper will analyze the environmental risks of waste disposal in Asuncion, Paraguay and how that affects the land as well as the people. An overview will be made on the Cateura Landfill, its residents and workers, initiatives proposed by locals, as well as those made on a global scale. Through research it seems that small but conscious efforts are being made by government and residents of the city to regulate better waste management systems, with assistance of other nations.…

Many organizations within the United States believe that America has been struck with a "trash crisis", however, this is not truly case from the recent Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) facts for 2010. Before, we start let us take a moment to discuss what trash or municipal solid waste (MSW) is. MSW is the collection of commonly used items that discarded by the general populace, many of these include packaging, food scraps, grass clippings, sofas, computers, tires and house appliances (EPA). Although the information from the EPA shows that the waste in pounds per person has increase from 3.66 to 4.43 in the time frame of 1980 and 2010, it is the amount the being recycled that has increased substantially going from a meager 10% in 1980…

2. One of the main problems of the residents concerns uncollected rubbish (point 1). Initially, rubbish was collected three times a week. However, since August this year the garbage collectors have only been coming once a week. Our litter bins are always filled to the brim and we have no choice but to leave the bags of rubbish next to the bins. The rotting waste causes a terrible stench (point 2). Furthermore, stray cats and dogs scatter the rubbish (point 3) in searching for food. This leads to unhealthy environment in the neighbourhood.…

The Municipal Solid Waste is based in 4 main components that are recycling, composting, landfilling and waste-to-energy that is mainly done by burning the waste. This is known as materials of no longer being of value and is thrown out for disposal. Waste is handled and separated into different containers which are divided into solids, plastics and paper mainly. There are different types of Waste Handling starting back in the 50’s into open dumps, In the 70’s landfills where made but created health problems as well as air pollution and gases and now we have new technologies and legislation to better the way of the waste. There have been divisions of the waste created better known as recycling all plastics, cans, and paper. This reduces the contaminants that are released to the air that produce the plastic and the others. Mainly all are recycled and reused, placed thru a recycling machine that makes this trash usable again.…

Common waste produced during pre-modern times was mainly ashes and human biodegradable waste, and these were released back into the ground locally, with minimum environmental impact. Tools made out of wood or metal were generally reused or passed down through the generations.…
