Some of the Advantages and Disadvantages of Travel
What are the advantages and disadvantages of travel?

One of the advantages of travel is that it broadens the mind or, in other words, broadens an individual’s life experiences. In addition, the exposure to a another part of your own country or a foreign country allows you to reexamine your life and to reassess your way of thinking. Another advantage, in the case of foreign travel, is that it is a reason for learning a foreign language. Learning a foreign language provides you with both intellectual stimulation and a means of understanding a foreign culture. Through being able to communicate in a foreign language, this opens up new doors for you – you can meet a whole variety of different people. Travel can also help you get back to your roots. For people whose parents or grandparents were immigrants, travelling to the land where their forefathers came from allows them to understand their origins and, thus, to understand their place in history. Finally, travel enables you to see some of the famous tourist spots and landmarks in the world which, otherwise, would only be experienced second hand through books and the Internet.
As for some of the disadvantages, these involve suffering from homesickness, if you are in a foreign country for any length of time. Then there is the disadvantage of incurring unforeseen travel expenses when you may not have budgeted for this. For people who do not speak the language of the country they are in there is the added advantage of being a target for crooks.

"Traveling is a fool's paradise," Ralph Waldo Emerson said. "I have no cranky objection to world travel for the purposes of art, of study, and goodwill, as long as the individual is first domesticated, or doesn't go abroad with the hope of finding something greater that what he knows. He who travels to be amused, or to get something he doesn't have within, travels away from himself…" While Emerson's comments may seem extreme to those who enjoy the occasional trip for leisure, he makes an important point regarding the value of travel from both a scholarly and personal standpoint. Studying abroad fulfills what Emerson sees as the deeper purpose of travel, which I realized last fall semester when I studied abroad at the University of…

Travelling the world is another way in which worthwhile learning occurs. Travelling the world allows you to see how other people around the world live. When you see how other people in other countries live it can really let you see how fortunate you are and allows you to appreciate the things you have. When you see how other people live it can also open your eyes to see how you could be living your life instead of how you are living your life. You can also see how hard other people work and it can inspire you to work harder in your life. You can also see other cultures or religions and you can appreciate other people’s way of life. One thing is for certain, we only serve to gain from our travels. Two paths await you when you travel. You can leave behind all the comforts of home and set off for a sheltered location that provides all the same comforts available to you at home. Or you can take the second route. Shed your lifestyle, customs, and certainties and escape into a new world that you can fully embrace. Trust me, the second path is always more fulfilling, plus the stories you come home with will be even better than any spa retreat could ever serve up. Travel should be something you learn from as much as to enjoy. Anyone can travel, but smart travelers will approach everything with an open mind and heart that allows them to see the real beauty in the places they set out to explore. Here are some of my favorite travel quotes to get you thinking differently about the way you travel. On Why You Should Travel Experience travel, these are as education in themselves. Euripides He who does not travel does not know the value of men. Moorish Proverb Wandering re-establishes the original harmony which once existed between man and the universe. Anatole France The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page. St. Augustine Motivation To Go Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds. Explore. Dream. Discover. Mark Twain Adventure is worthwhile in itself. Amelia Earhart Only those who will…
