In Julia Alvarez’s short story, ”Nombres”, and in the visual, “Graduation Day”, both depict the common theme that people should embrace their culture and heritage. In “Nombres”, the theme can be seen when Julia's mother states, “You know what (Julia’s) friend Shakespeare said, ‘A rose by any other name would smell as sweet’,” (Alvarez Pg. 1). This shows that Julia’s mother doesn’t want her to be ashamed of where she comes from, and that she should embrace her name. This theme is also evident in the visual,” Graduation Day”. The fact that the loving daughter, who just graduated from school, is hugging her hard-working father, shows that she is grateful for him, and that she is proud of him. However, in “Rain of Gold” written by Victor Villasenor, the character of Dona Margarita, a wife and a mother, possessed strength that was even able to boldly reprimand the character of her husband. Dona Margarita’s strength and support was valued in the book as one of the reason of fulfilling the family’s dreams. She was able to express her anger and frustration on her husband, Don Victor, when he gambled and got drunk. Her family felt hope when she did not give-up her hope that her daughter, Sophia, was still alive. The House on Mango street is a feminist piece of literature because it brings attentions to the sexist way the men in Esperanza’s society regard women. Esperanza tells her story by focusing on the women around her who are owned by the dominant men in their lives due to restricting gender roles that encompasses not only women but men. “My great-grandfather threw a sack over her head and carried her off...She (Esperanza’s grandmother) looked out the window her whole life, the way so many women sit their sadness on an elbow.” (11) Cisneros brings attention to the cruel way that men in Esperanza’s society treat women. The normality of these discriminatory actions describes a gender role that society has set for men, to be the dominant figure in…

Esperanza’s struggles as a member of a Mexican family in America are not isolated to relating only to Mexican-American families or other immigrant groups; every reader can find a way to relate to Esperanza’s story in this novel. In particular, the lesson of befriending Sally stood out. Esperanza befriends Sally because she is starting to be curious about boys. She finds that Sally is very popular among the boys and wants to hang out with her to earn their attention as well. Eventually being involved with Sally leads Esperanza into an unfortunate and traumatizing experience. I think that our teens and young adults in society will really resonate with this part of the novel and possibly learn something from this story. Also, pay special attention to the women Cisneros describes as sitting by windows. Each of these women represents a negative and almost helpless figure in society for a variety of…

At the core is Esperanza’s struggle to define herself. As Esperanza learns to define herself as a woman in a community that lacks strong female values, her perception of her identity changes. For example, Esperanza learns about sexuality and her identity as a women. Marin represents naivety in sexuality. Though Esperanza is first curious and holds Marin in high esteem because she “knows lots of things [about] sexuality” (27), her perception of sexuality in relation to her community changes. Similarly, though Sally seems to represent the “beautiful and cruel,” Esperanza realizes Sally is not like the women in movies. Sally is an independent but a dependent of love. As Esperanza observes other women in the neighborhood and the marriages that bind them, is realizes that women cannot be both “beautiful and cruel” in a male-dominated society; Marin and Sally are both trapped by the naivety of love. Furthermore, even though Nenny rejects the stereotypical notions of escaping through marriage or getting pregnant, Nenny still chooses to make the best of Mango Street. Esperanza, in contrast, wants to leave Mango Street all together. Esperanza is determined not to become a woman sitting by a window, choosing to “ not to grow up tame like the others who lay their necks on the threshold waiting for the ball and chain” (90). Unlike her mother who “could’ve been somebody” (90), she chooses to be somebody. She chooses to not be passive. Though most women choose to be either trapped in marriages that keep them on Mango Street or tied down by their children, she chooses autonomy over sexuality, and through poetry and writing, Esperanza gains a sense of…

Esperanza is not a significant supporter of the gender positions that continue to keep women in her neighborhood demoralized. The men on Mango Street abuse not only their wives but also their daughters and imprison them in the home. Many times just being a woman can cause reason for such abuse. This is a fact that can be observed in the beatings which unfortunately Sally continuously gets, and also in the rape of Esperanza. Esperanza presents us with an analysis of the way men and women relate to each other and refuse to abide by the demands applied to her sex by marriage or perhaps acting in a womanly way. For our character, disobeying gender position and staying independent is considered an act of rebellion as well as a source of power.…

How can we describe it? Describing love is very hard because in every phase of life, characterization of love can be varied. In childhood, through romantic films and stories, we started to get feeling that love is passionate and when people will be going through it, life would be full of happiness. In adulthood, people’s perception about love might change. When ages grow, some people become optimistic about love, some become pessimistic and some of them are on a way to rediscover love.
