Someone like You Book Report
Sarah Dessen is a remarkable young adult author who has written many outstanding books such as This Lullaby and Keeping the Moon. A movie called How to Deal was also made based on her books That Summer and Someone like You. She is thirty-eight years old, however somehow, she seems to have unique gift where she reads and comes into teenager’s minds. Sarah can understand and feel what teenagers are going through most of the time, giving the story the effect where it seems like you are actually the main character. She can turn some experience that did not mean anything or was not significant, into something dramatic, heartwarming, and full of feeling; a masterpiece. Sarah Dessen took her first breath in Evanston, Illinois June 6th, 1970. During her childhood, she had a very open expanded imagination. When her high schools years came, she was a little bit of a rebel since she always loved hanging out with her girlfriends than doing some sport; however she took a creative writing class to help her be better at it. During that class, she really, truly recognized how much she loves to write. Halley and Scarlett have been best friends for years, sharing secrets, clothes, and crushes. People know Scarlett as the popular, flamboyant one; Halley’s just her quiet sidekick. Then, at the beginning of their junior year, the balance shifts. First, Scarlett’s boyfriend Michael is killed in a freak accident; soon afterward, she learns that she is carrying his baby. For the first time, Scarlett really needs Halley. Their friendship may bend under the weight, but it’ll never break–because a true friendship is a promise you keep forever.
By reading this book I can clearly see how much Sarah Dessen has improved as an author after several novels. While Someone like You is a likable, heart-warming story, it lacks the strong emotions and pitch-perfect writing of Dessen's later books. One thing I would have loved

The title of this book relates to the story, because in the book, Ponyboy and Johnny are "outsiders." They can be thought of as Outsiders because they are labeled Greasers although they do not act like hoodlums, like the rest of the Greasers. They are thought of as Greasers just because they live on the East Side of town, and because they slick back their hair. But Ponyboy and Johnny are different then all of the other Greasers because they show their emotions, and are sensitive.…
