Ex. 9
1.
A. It will talk about U.S High Schools B. The reading was written by a highschool student C. It has to do with learning situations
2. I don’t know a lot about how public high schools function but I do know that they are offered to students without charge, also funded by taxation.
3. The purpose for reading material like this is to answer the questions, and to learn about the topic
4.
A. How was the author’s experience in high school? C. What is his point he’s trying to make? D. Was he successful in high school and did he personally do well?
5.
A. The atmosphere when I was in high school really relates to the authors feelings about ‘School or Prison’. “Unfortunately, my school is losing qualities of high school.” (Peifer) To me after the budget cuts back in high school a lot changed. My classes got really big in size. To learn was a struggle in the type of environment the class was. The teachers spent more of their time talking about students bad behavior then teaching us the material we needed to learn. B. I know personally, and from others that having a teacher that cares for you and has your best interest makes it easy to learn. I have always been a one to be eager to learn, and I’ve always loved it. It’s easier to give my attention and respect to a teacher if the teachers are focusing on the class. I had a teacher that I absolutely wish I had all through high school. He taught us what it takes to take responsibility for our actions and how our choices affect our society.

Ex. 10
1.
The reading kept me intrigued because I could relate to what the author was talking about. It made it easier to understand too because it’s been very recent since I was in high school.

2. I wasn’t distracted throughout the reading. If I was though I could have maybe tried reading in a different setting, monitor my attention, and active read.

3. By staying alert. After each paragraph I thought about how I could relate.
4.
I monitored my comprehension well. I did it by reading the text out loud
5.
I wrote in my reflections about how the quality of schools are changing. I wrote also about how good teachers impact students learning. One thing that pulled a trigger in my mind was how the attitude of people (students & teachers) really does affect the class. Just being at PCC this week I’ve seen great teachers who I can respect and makes it exciting to come to class.

Ex. 11
1.
In paragraph one you learn that the author feels that the mood of the school is negative. Just being there makes your positive energy go away. In paragraph two you see how anxious and concerned the students are if they are even a second late to class. The punishments seem unfair.
2.
I think Peifer says the school is like a prison because of all the regulations that have been added to the school system.
3.
1. Feels the school is negative because of the teachers attitudes 2. Staff yelling at the students 3. Wants to be treated as an adult but doesn’t get that from the staff
4.
So many new security measures have been put into place because of the recent shootings at high schools and colleges across the U.S they are trying to prevent what they can’t control.

5. Peifer says students will act like prisoners because of the attitudes of the teachers. Their interactions are unfriendly. The administration emphasizes on controlling students and ignores educational matters.

Ex. 12
1.
When I attended high school the majority of the teachers wouldn’t give me their time which was very frustrating for me. I had to rely more on my classmates for help because the teachers weren’t reliable.
2.
In some ways I do agree that the authors description is accurate. Like having to stay in a classroom for say. Students not being able to use the restroom during class will not stop the inevitable.
3.
Personally I think that teachers and administrators can at least try and make the best out of their job since it’s what they do everyday. Teachers that complain about what they are “having to do” etc makes the students learning environment automatically negative. It leads to a harder time in class. Good positive attitudes make a world of a difference.

I enjoyed how easily I could lose myself in the novel; after what I thought was only minutes turned out to be hours and before I knew it, it was early the next morning and all I wanted to do was keep reading. Personally, reading this novel was the exact definition of being swept away and taken into it because most times I completely left reality and if it was the middle of the day in the novel, I would truly believe it was the middle of the day in reality! I felt every moment. Except usually, when Willow felt sadness, I was angry mostly from a lack of understanding of why she continued to live through societal views and while talking to my culturally and ethnically diverse groupmates at CHS some didn’t feel angry at all, some felt satisfaction or even pride, and that just goes to show that this novel is more revolutionary than most can see. A lot of people see this as just another story, but it can unite a wide range of people and create conflict and discussion, but most of all it creates knowledge, certainly more knowledge than we can consciously verify. I would not change a single punctuation mark at this time.…

Here in his writing, Kozol shares his experiences with students and teachers while visiting Fremont High School in Los Angeles, California. From the beginning, Kozol set the mood for the piece by describing the lackluster conditions of the buildings. He described the lack of sufficient classroom space by saying that "nearly a third of all the classrooms in the school, were located in portables...took place in converted storage closets" (Kozol 641). By beginning his written tour of this school with these vivid descriptions, Kozol instantly placed me inside both the school and a depressing atmosphere.…

    Mock College Essay

Once upon a time, in a world of its own, stood the prison-like building of Nichols Junior High. Unimposing to any untrained eye idling by on the streets passing by outside, the green and blue clad crowded halls harbored the mischief of troublesome youth running wild. Meanwhile, all others hid in the shadows waiting for the bells to sound and the leashes to be loosened in a mockery of freedom. The cacophony of shouts to gather allies, competitions for dominance, and trade in some good or another only to be smashed under the watchful eye of the wardens draped the entirety of the building. Only when the cells were filled to the brim did a frail sense of quiet try to fight the inevitable losing battle of madness until uproar in one of the cells shattered it once more.…
