OBSERVATIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SOMBRERO GALAXY
(M104/NGC 4594)
DOMINIC J. TAN

ABSTRACT
The Sombrero Galaxy (M104/NGC 4594) is an unbarred spiral galaxy and a suspected member of the galaxy group within the southern regions of the Virgo cluster. It is a nearby galaxy with a very distinctive appearance making it easy to identify. Despite being easily recognisable, it is still not completely understood. The exact process involved in its formation is unclear and it is not known where all its emissions come from, particularly in the sub-millimetre range. Its peculiar shape and structure means that it is a prime candidate to help understand early spiral galaxies and their evolution and formation, while at the same

It is a member of a complex cloud of galaxies, however, it is unknown as to whether it is a member of a proper galaxy group (Tully, 1988). The Sombrero galaxy is different to other galaxies as it has a bright nucleus, an unusually large central bulge and a prominent dust lane in its inclined disk. These significant features gives the galaxy the appearance of a sombrero and hence its name (English, 2007).
Lying 8,600kpc from Earth with coordinates RA 12h 39m 59.4s, DEC -11° 37’ 23’’, it is 50,000 light years across and with an apparent magnitude of 8.98 (NASA, 2003), the Sombrero Galaxy is just beyond the limit of the naked eye and is easily seen through small telescopes, making it an attractive object for amateur and professional astronomers alike. Located on the southern edge of the rich
Virgo cluster of galaxies, it is one of the most massive objects in that group – equivalent to 800 billion suns (NASA, 2003).
Originally classified as an unbarred spiral galaxy, new observations from NASA’s

In “The Milky Way’s Greatest Feat,” author Ken Croswell explains that the Milky Way galaxy is enormous, dozens of insignificant galaxies scatter around it. The Milky Way revolves around a colossal black hole which is in the center of the galaxy and it is named “Sagittarius A-star.” It is four million times the paths of the accumulation of the sun. In this National Geographic magazine, Croswell explains how the black hole is capable of absorbing objects such as a star. Scientists can measure this because of the friction and gravity the object being absorbed into the black hole lights up and produces clouds made of gas.…

Many of the details of the galaxy remain a mystery, foremost of which is how it formed. So-called "classic" ring galaxies are generally formed by the collision of a small galaxy with a larger disk-shaped galaxy. This collision produces a density wave in the disk which leads to a characteristic ring-like appearance. Such an event would have happened at least 2Ð3 billion years in the past,[citation needed] and may have resembled the processes that form polar-ring galaxies. However, there is no sign of any second galaxy that would have acted as the "bullet", and the core of Hoag's Object has a very low velocity relative to the ring, making the typical formation hypothesis quite…

Orbiting the bulge, a rotating disk gives the galaxy its distinctive classification. The disk separates itself into arms that circle the galaxy. These spiral arms contain young, bright stars, as well as a wealth of gas and dust. The brilliant stars are the reason the arms are so well defined.…

The Andromeda galaxy, 2.5 million light years away. It’s racing through space, everything blown apart, like shrapnel in an explosion because our universe is expanding with an ever accelerating pace; hence every element of it is going away from its neighbors. We are seeing this galaxy as it was when our ape like ancestors first walked on the African plains. Further through space and further back in time. There is order in this chaos, a perfect pattern formation behind the infinite variety, an endless cycle of birth and death, creation and destruction. It’s a pattern woven through the vast fabric of space that binds each of these galaxies. Now,…

Historically, galaxies have been categorized according to their apparent shape (usually referred to as their visual morphology). A common form is the elliptical galaxy, which has an ellipse-shaped light profile. Spiral galaxies are disk-shaped assemblages with curving, dusty arms. Galaxies with irregular or unusual shapes are known as peculiar galaxies, and typically result from disruption by the gravitational pull of neighboring galaxies. Such interactions between nearby galaxies, which may ultimately result in galaxies merging, may induce episodes of significantly increased star formation, producing what is called a star burst galaxy. Small galaxies that lack a coherent structure could also be referred to as irregular galaxies.…

Discovered by Edwin Hubble in 1936, was the first Elliptical galaxy. Elliptical galaxies are one million light years across in diameter and have more than three trillion stars. As all galaxies, they are held together by gravity. If Earth was in an Elliptical galaxy, it would always be bright outside. They contain a lot of older stars versus younger stars. M87, an Elliptical galaxy, is one of the largest galaxies recorded. An Interesting fact is that, scientist think that they are nearing the end of the evolution line for galaxies. There are black holes in the middle of the galaxies which have an enormous black hole in the center that consumes gas and dust. Elliptical galaxies are often named after their size. Elliptical galaxies range from circular to long, narrow, and cigar-shaped galaxies. Ellipse in Elliptical means a circle, hence why it’s spherical. But not all galaxies are spheres; in fact Irregular galaxies are named that because their shape isn’t a circular shape, but an irregular one.…
