Sona Reflection
The fourth State of the Nation Address of President Benigno Simeon Aquino III was held last July 22, making the third year of his presidency and opening the session of the 16th Congress. It was the longest SONA he had given so far, earning 88 rounds of applause from the congressmen, senators, government officials, media, etc. His speech covered a lot of areas such as his accomplishments so far in his term, both political and economic aspects, praises for the public and some government departments who gave their outstanding service for the country, and also criticisms against public servants and government agencies.
President Aquino mentioned the Bangsamaro peace framework, success of his Pantawid ng Pamilyang Pilipino Program, TESDA scholars, housing program for informal settlers and the 7.8% GDP last year. Also, he hailed the passage of RH law, Sin Tax Law, AFP Modernization Act and the K-12 Law. He also talked about the nationwide construction of infrastructure such as airports, roads, ports, etc, increasing transportation efficiency. He talked about the drastic improvement of our agricultural sector and how we can already provide food for ourselves and not anymore relying on others for this aspect in our lives.
His goal was “widespread opportunity” – the key to a comprehensive and sustained progress. Maximizing opportunities for more people will help create better nation-builders.
He ended his speech with these words; “I am Noynoy Aquino, and I proudly say to the world: I am Filipino. How wonderful it is to be a Filipino in these times.” In my opinion, President Aquino was successful in relaying the inclusive growth of his administration. He regained the trust of the Filipino people and his speech really highlighted his confidence with his

n the second year of the presidency of Benigno ‘Noynoy’ Aquino III, his administration continues to unravel as brandishing more of the same elite governance defined and motivated by the narrow agenda and interests of the few. This was evident in the impeachment of Corona which was sold to the public as part of his “daang matuwid” agenda but soon enough was perceived as an effort to control the entire bureaucracy for selfserving political and economic reasons. As is the nature of traditional politics, the Aquino presidency has played along the agenda of the US, the long-time patron of the country’s elite, in exchange for its continued patronage and support. By serving as the agent of increased US military presence in the region, Aquino has stoked the tension with China over disputed territories, in the process risking regional stability and further undermining national sovereignty. As is the nature of traditional politics, the Aquino presidency has promoted an economic regime that excludes the poor while creating the most favorable environment for big business through public-private partnership (PPP) or the intensified corporate takeover of various economic sectors and activities— from utilities and social services to the exploitation of natural resources. Its claim of inclusive growth is being belied by increasing poverty and social restiveness that even massive doses of conditional cash transfer (CCT) dole outs could not pacify. Meanwhile, the human rights of those who dissent against the enduring social injustice and lack of real reforms continue to be abused with impunity by alleged state forces.…

President Aquino’s SONA in 2013 was focused on the achievements of the government such as approval of the Sin Tax Reform Law and “Responsible Parenthood Law” (RH Law), reforms in Education System(K-12), Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), increase in number of TESDA graduates, increase in Philhealth enrolles from 62% to 81% and improved benefits, allocation of P6.2 billion for flood control in Metro Manila, completion of 9,377 housing units for Typhoon Sendong victims, 63% reduction in number of private armed groups, 21.4 increase in foreign tourist arrivals in 2012 and 7.8% GDP (Gross Domestic Product) growth during the first quarter of 2013. However, it also highlights some of the changes to hike SSS contributions and train fares. PNoy said the need to reform pension scheme is necessary to avoid depletion of SSS funds in the next 28 years. He also explains that fare hikes in MRT and LRT will be implemented. The government subsidizes each passenger's fare by as much as P45 and said to be unfair to residents from Visayas and Mindanao who never set foot on the trains but fund the train operations. But according to critics or analysts, President Aquino did not mention solid agenda on how he will lead us to his 'daang matuwid' campaign until 2016. Nancy Binay highlights that Pnoy didn't include on his speech ways to improve employment rate in the country. Despite the gross domestic product (GDP) growth for 2012 and various economic reform programs of Aquino government for his three years in the Palace, Philippines is still has the worst unemployment rate in Asia. More than 11 million Filipinos are jobless according to SWS and IBON Foundation survey results on the first quarter of 2013. Poverty remains the most critical social problem that needs to be addressed. Philippines' poverty line marks a per capita income of 16,841 pesos a year. According to the data from the National Statistical Coordination Board, more than one-quarter (27.9%) of the population fell…
