The book is amazing, but it is lacking in the use of descriptive words. It seems dull in some points of this book. It is all around a good book in many other ways though. It shows Cole's…
Thomas Szasz says, “ Two wrongs don't make a right, but they make a good excuse.” In the book Song of Solomon, Toni Morrison tells the story during the time where whites could kill blacks and get away with it. She paints us a picture of how it was back then when she says, “A young Negro boy had been found stomped to death in Sunflower County, Mississippi. There were no questions asked about who stomped him- his murderers had boasted freely- and there were no questions about the motive.” Does this sound fair?…
Critique I liked this book because it was interesting and you don’t know what will happen next. This book leaves you hanging. I like books with drama and this book has a lot of it. I also like how it was in third person point of view, so it switched between different people.…
The only aspect that bothers me a bit is that the story seems a bit jumbled; events that spread years apart are put together in one page, and then a few paragraphs later, the story flies back to third grade memories.I find myself desperately trying to reorient myself, but sometimes I simply cannot and have to reread the whole page.…
In the novels, Song of Solomon, by Toni Morrison, and As I Lay Dying, by William Faulkner the constitution of Darl and Milkman’s identity transform along the way of an ongoing journey in, which they carry the burdens of their families while struggling to gain complete independence and their indifference to the world surrounding them.…
I found the book to be easy, exciting reading because the story line was very realistic and easily relatable. This book flowed for me to a point when, at times, it was difficult to put down. Several scenes pleasantly caught me off guard and some were extremely hilarious, namely, the visit to Martha Oldcrow. I found myself really fond of the characters, especially Harlen Bigbear. Harlen came across as a sort of trickster', but a likable one. He was gentle, caring, and harmless in his own right. Will, the protagonist, was very likable as well. However, his character only evolved for me as a result of Harlen's unconditional and relentless friendship with him. In short, Will's character would've lacked without the likeness of a Harlen Bigbear. The character naming was also very ingenious. The Oldpersons, Prettywomans, baby South Wing, and others…
In "Song of Solomon" the women take somewhat of a backseat compared to the men. There are plenty of strong and important female characters in this work but they become disposable to the men. For example Macon Dead II loved the thrill of taking off Ruth's shoes and stocking but as time passed he simply hated her and wasn't afraid to hit her either. From Ruth's perspective she just craved loved and wanted someone to fill her void since he husband would no longer show her an ounce of appreciation. Ruth then decided that Milkman would be her champion and she would love him and hopefully that love would be reciprocated and this relationship would eventually lead her to breastfeeding Milkman even when he was too old for it and thus him receiving…
Firstly, I'm going to elaborate some on the first, second, and fourth prompts... My opinions developed of Milkman and his sisters throughout the text. My angle on Milkman shifts from noncommittal, to disliking him. He's too apathetic and abuses his social status, which I specifically dislike. Arrogance and apathy aren't all that bad in my book, but under his circumstances it is, he has no accomplishments of his own to lead to his attitude. On the other hand i grow to like him as the text develops. He becomes a sort of survivor. Or rather a man…
As adapted from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Longfellow states, “Time has a doomsday book, on whose pages he is continually recording illustrious names. But as often as a new name is written there, an old one disappears. Only a few stand in illuminated characters never to be effaced.” Parallel to this belief, it is to my belief that some heroes would be forgotten, while some heroes would be remembered forever, depending on the extent of his or her good deeds, or the capacity of a region in which the hero had affected the area upon.…
This was an odd book for me. I had a lot of trouble getting into it and even at the midway point this book was only a 2-3 star book. But then towards the end it got much better and I ended up giving it four stars because the ending didn't go as I had expected it and I gave it major points for that.…
In the beginning it started kind of slow but it it quickly picked up. It was very cool interesting how the author used the men to show how the majority of people actually had the live in that time period. Also i think it would not of been as great a story is lennie wasn't special because since he couldn't think for himself, gorge thought for him and it was much easier to follow because its like u only have to understand how one person thinks even though you're reading about two different mean. The challenges that they face are amazing because it's so easy to imagine. They went threw things that a person would probably go through like having to walk everywhere, sleep outside with only a fire keeping you warm, living off limited food and that's why it's so realistic. I did not talk about the end of the book because didn't want to spoil it but it was the perfect way to end it. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes to adventures, comedy or just a great…
The second issue that needs to be looked upon are the stylistic devices use by the author. Those are: the collage technique, the foreshadowing of some of the events and multitude of repetitions. These tools can be traced in every chapter of the novel. Moreover both of them connect different levels in the plot.…
Before I read this novel I had only ever seen the effects of racism from a white person's point of view. After reading this I began to understand how life would have been for a black person during this time, and the effects which it would have had on their job, family and own self-esteem.…
This book made a lot of sense to me I had gone through the same events as one of the characters in the story, before the teacher could go on with the book I raised my hand I and told all about my adventures and struggles as a kid and how i could relate to the characters in the book. Soon after I was presenting to parents and faculty and fellow classmates. I participated in a conference call of classes in Hartford, VT and Tennessee who had also read the novel. Now here I am writing it in my college essay. The book had a huge influence on…
All in all, it was a fun and enjoyable read. Although I don’t recommend this book for young readers as they might take it at face value and think that such behavior depicted in this book is…
