The main character in Mildred D. Taylor’s short story “Song of the Trees” is Cassie Logan who lives on Logan land in Mississippi during the Great Depression. The problem this character faces is that her family is being racially discriminated by a white man named Mr. Andersen. He threatens to chop down trees on the Logan land that have sentimental value to Cassie and the family. During the course of the story, Cassie must fight for her family, land, and dignity. She will stand up to anyone, even a white man, if it means keeping her family safe. For example, when Cassie, Christopher John, and Little Man visit the forest but are told by Mr. Andersen to leave and go home, Cassie disobeys him. She tells him that they will not leave. She also tells him that he’s the one invading their property. Cassie truly understands how much the land means to her family and despises Mr. Andersen for trying to take it away. Also, Cassie always wants what’s right. She knows chopping down her family’s trees on their land is not honorable. Another example of Cassie being protective is when Mr. Andersen shoves Little Man to the ground. “I rushed towards Mr. Andersen, my fist in a mighty hammer, shouting, ‘You ain’t got no right to push on Little Man, why don’t you push on someone your own size-like me, you ole-’” Cassie has to be dragged away from Mr. Andersen. She makes anyone who insults of harms her siblings her enemy. Cassie makes Mr. Andersen her adversary and she will not let him win the battle against her family. Finally, when Mr. Andersen threatens to whip Christopher John and Little Man, she lets them run away. Instead, she stands up and takes the hit. If Little Man or Christopher John were to be whipped, Cassie knows that they would start bawling. She doesn’t want to see them hurt, so she takes the hit instead. Also, she understands that she

In this passage from “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park, the tone of the author was dramatic. One example of the author using the tone dramatic is on line 2 of the passage. “The sun was relentless and eternal” This is dramatic because the author could have said the sun was hot but they made it so perfectly explained that it is so miserable to be outside. Saying relentless is meaning the sun is consistently burning and the heat is very very strong. Using the word eternal is meaning all day the sun is shining at its brightest.…

She was very mature for her age and her actions reminded me of myself as a little girl. Her sassy and confident attitude made me laugh at times. I also enjoyed how Holden didn’t realize the real problem in his life, was himself. As he was judging others for the qualities he found irritating he wasn’t able to see himself displaying those qualities himself, whom I believed caused many problems throughout the story. 2.…

The characters are all diverse and bring varying perspectives to the table of Stacey’s and the reader’s understanding. The role of the women in the novel, no matter the age, is to help one another, and their archetypes do exactly that. The term “Too much Raven,” which is often phrased in the book by all the women describes the mischevious side in them, but also their role as caretakers of their people, specifically what Stacey’s role was. Raven is as much as the women in the book as she is the…

Also, this main idea is demonstrated through the way Shane treats Katie. He often calls her names like “Geek Girl” or tries to intimidate her. An example of this, is when he menacingly follows her through the halls, until she has to take refuge in the washroom. Additionally, at one point Shane assaults Katie in an attempt to aggravate Devan. This is described in the lines “Katie wriggling in his grip, still trying to break free. Her wrist is red from all the wrenching and twisting” (page 158)…

You may not understand that now, but one day you will. Then you’ll see.” (Page 7).
