Sonia Sotomayor Essay

Sonia Sotomayor is a Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. She is known for being the first Hispanic justice, the first Latina, the third female justice, and the twelfth Roman Catholic justice. Sonia was born in the Bronx to her two Puerto-Rican born parents. Her mother’s occupation was a practical nurse while her father had a low education and was unable to speak English. During her early ages of life, she was mostly raised by her mother because her father died when she was only nine. Little time after her father passed away, she became fluent in English and was inspired to go into a legal career and become a judge. At a young age, she attended Blessed Sacrament School for grammar where she was valedictorian. She began to work at a young age while passing her entry test to attend Cardinal Spellman High School in her hometown where she also graduated as valedictorian. To become included in the student life, she became a student activist. Her main focus as an activist was on faculty and education because Princeton did not have a Latino professor or a Latino American studies. She was able to persuade the university to accept her proposals on Latino based topics. As a senior, she went on to be awarded the Pyne Prize. This was the top award for undergraduates which highlighted her grades and extracurricular activities. After graduating from Princeton, she enrolled in law school at Yale also on a scholarship. Just like she did at Princeton, she got involved with campus life by participating in managing a group called The Yale Studies in World Public Order. In her next few years at Yale, she recieved a job offers at a firms. This was the rising point of her life.
