In the memoir, Year Of Impossible Goodbyes, Sookan changes from someone who is dependent on others and becomes someone who is independent and responsible. This change is seen in three moments. When Grandfather dies, Sookan has to take part of the place of Mother. Sookan has to do more work on her own and help Inchun, too. "Sitting on the ground by the tree stump, we sorted, folded, and then packed into bundles of twelve, or 'tah,' the pile of ugly green socks that Aunt Tiger put out for us in the morning"(Choi 49). Laila and Tariq have a very close relationship. They understand each other very well and they communicate very much even when they can’t see each other, “Well, his flashlight will be going off before you know it, Babi said, referring to Laila and Tariq’s nightly signaling game. They played it for so long it had become a bedtime ritual, like brushing teeth” (110). A couple who did not communicate very well was Laila’s parents Mammy and Babi. Unlike Tariq and Laila, Babi and Mammy argued all the time, “Downstairs. her parents were fighting. Again. Laila knew the routine: Mammy ferocious, indomitable, pacing and ranting… Finally, a door slammed. Pounding footsteps” (108). While in Laila and Tariq’s relationship there is no person who rules over the other, Mammy rules over Babi. She always scolds him and makes him feel bad, “Babi sitting, looking sheepish and dazed, nodding obediently, waiting for the storm to pass… Babi it seemed, would survive to see another day”…

At the beginning of the story my opinion of Iokaste is that she is a loyal and good wife. I can see why Iokaste committed suicide and I can understand how devastating the news of her husband being her son was. I can only imagine the emotions that Iokaste was going through and because of this I think that she did what she thought was best for herself. In some ways think she did her children a favor by committing suicide because now her children won’t have to grow up hearing people talk badly about their mother but on the other hand she left them to fend for themselves, which I think no mother should do to her children.…

The definition of "interloper" is someone who is unwanted, a trespasser or intruder. Who then, was Saki referring to as to the interlopers? "Wolves." This is the last line in the story. These are the ones who were unwanted and intruded on these two men. The fear of death would bring these two together but the interlopers would erase what they had just become. I truly believe that these wolves are the ones that Saki was referring to in the…

Kim was also amazed at the differences in Korean schools and those in America. In Korea, she describes school as being quiet and respectful, using examples of bowing to teachers and wearing slippers to avoid making marks on the flooring. In one particular example she talks of youngsters kissing in the classroom while the teacher calls out attendance, something that surely didn’t happen in Korea. A hard dose of reality soon came to Kim when she realized just how much of her life was going to have to change. Her mother, who was considered an elite citizen of…

After dinner I drove to Tuttle Creek Lake. When I reached here, I walked on a flat road. The road ahead was hazy and sides grew tall and dense trees and lush grass, put on a little bit of green energy for the night. There was some insects chirp in the grass, which brought a little life for the night. The hung moon in the sky is so dim and the night seemed so lonely. When I walked in the secluded path, suddenly a kind of moist and fresh breath broke through in and the breath became stronger. Then I realized that the breath was from Tuttle Creek Lake. At this time, a gust of wind blew on my face and I felt I seemed to be beyond the reality and subject to any bondage no longer. I sat on a rock nearby the lake and watched Tuttle Creek Lake. Under the deep gray sky, Tuttle Creek Lake was so tolerance and endless. It looked like a big mirror in calm on the lake formed a small sky and even hold the hazy moon in the sky. But this time this moon was not hazy, it showed bright light. The calm lake covered with silvery white armor and looked like it was ready to fight. The wind blow more fierce, the lake was no longer calm under the deep gray sky and it seemed erupt. The calm lake started to flush the ripples and the bright mirror was full of cracks, finally the mirror was broken. The lake waves became layer upon layer and impacted on the rocks. At this time I sat nearby the lake, the broken waves fell on my feet. When I stood on the coast and faced the vast lake, I felt I became so small. At this time, the boredom in my heart had been taken away into the lake with the waves. The wind was still blowing, the lake under the moon accepted my unhappiness and I felt better and more comfortable.…
