Education has always been an important aspect of my life. While in high school I took challenging courses, such as advanced placement English and calculus, physics, and chemistry. I enjoyed the arts and was involved in art, band, and choir. Despite the time consuming practices for concerts, parades, musicals and exhibits, I was able to maintain an excellent GPA, allowing me to graduate with honors. I decided to stay near home and come to the University of Michigan- Flint because of the smaller class size, and the excellent program offered in my major.
I have received many scholarships since I began my college career. (You should list scholarships, type, and date here.)
Although education plays a significant role in my life, I am involved with many other activities. During high school I was an active member of several clubs, and served as treasurer and president. I frequently tutored middle school students by offering my time before and after school. I enjoy the arts and participated in many performances, often involving travel to other parts of the United States. Currently I am involved with fellow nursing students on a class and university level. I belong to the National Student Nurses Association as well. I have volunteered my time to inform individuals about what nursing involves. I have also done community work, such as blood pressure screening, and offering information for those at risk for hypertension and diabetes.
In addition to school related activities, I am involved with my local church. I teach a class of 3-6 year olds. When other teachers are unable to teach Sunday School, I come to their aid. I have participated in community cleanup, nursery day and choir. I feel that by participating in community-related activities I am setting a positive example for the children to follow.
Work is also part of my life. Until recently, I worked 16-20 hours a week to provide for educational expenses. Presently I work eight hours a week in the neonatal intensive care unit at Hurley Medical Center for premature infants. I enjoy working because I am able to see newborns in progress to a state where they can finally be discharged to their families. I enjoy teaching parents about their infants. Through my work experiences I have learned more about what to expect upon completion of my nursing program.
All of these experiences have helped to shape me. I have faced many challenges, balancing work and school, and I have willingly given my time. My goal is to become a registered nurse so that I can perform tasks that clients cannot do for themselves. I enjoy listening, working with others, and acting as a patient advocate and educator. I have a large number of nursing instructors who are wonderful, and who have had an influence on my life. I would one day like to give back what they have given to me by becoming an instructor. I know that when my goals are realized, I will be able to provide something meaningful to all of the patients.

I deserve to be selected for the KSU Foundation scholarship because I am dedicated to serving others and know how important it is to persevere. Having won an Air Force Junior ROTC national community service award in the 9th grade and having voluntarily completed over five hundred community service hours during my junior and senior years of high school, I want to continue on serving others in any capacity possible. Receiving this scholarship would allow me to continue on the path to becoming a surgeon for Doctors Without Borders by assisting me financially, allowing me to have more time to serve my community when I otherwise would have been working to be able to afford to stay in college and complete my degree program. Finally, my work and volunteer…

While researching texts written and published about Nurse Practitioners, I have found that Nurse Practitioners are rapidly becoming the top health partner choice for many Americans. Nurse Practitioners have been servicing patients for over forty years. The NP role had its initiation in the mid-sixties in response to a lack of physicians in the United States. They can perform very extensive and concentrated examinations; distinguish and treat common keen illnesses, as well as laboratory tests; and educate and instruct patients and their loved ones about maintaining a healthy lifestyle and possible health care options. In all fifty states Nurse Practitioners are allowed to prescribe medications to patients, including controlled substances. Only twenty-six states allow Nurse…

There are several advanced practice nurses in the United States. Advanced practice nurses consist of registered nurses who have a master’s degree or doctorate degree in nursing and specialize in a certain area. According to the textbook definition, “Advanced Practice Nursing is the patient-focused application of an expanded range of competencies to improve health outcomes for patients and populations is a specialized clinical area of the larger discipline of nursing” (Hamric, Hanson, Tracy, & O’Grady, 2014). Advance practice nurse roles include direct care roles such as nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialist, certified registered nurse anesthetists, and certified nurse midwives and indirect care roles such as nurse educators, nurse informaticists, nurse administrators, and nurse executives. These APN roles play a vital part in the future of healthcare. Understanding the role and scope of practice of an APN helps to show the similarity and help differentiate between each role and its specialty. This class has explained what it means and takes to practice as an advanced practice nurse. This paper will compare and contrast roles of APN’s and explore regulatory rules and requirements for NPs in Mississippi. Core…

For me, choosing to be a part of the nursing profession was not as easy as it may have been for others. I am not the daughter or granddaughter of a nurse. My mother was a single unemployed woman for most of my life. I knew I wanted to walk my own path, but I wasn’t certain what that was. When I entered the workforce, I didn’t follow my dreams; I simply followed familiar steps. For many years I wanted to pursue a career in the medical field, but responsibilities held me back. I realized while I may be very good at what I was doing, I was not following my heart.…

Both of these successes are the two greatest accomplishments of my high school career. These two achievements prove how dedicated I was, and still am, to getting the best education I could.
