Sophie Scholl grew up in the western part of Germany and had a pretty carefree childhood. Indeed, that changed when Hitler came to power in 1933 and began controlling Germany and laws against the Jews were passed. Just like her brother Hans Scholl and her father Robert Scholl, who also opposed the Nazi movement, Sophie decided to stand up against the Nazis. She joined an informal group called ‘the White Rose’ that her brother started to stand up against the ongoing political situation. They decided to make anti-war leaflets and handed them out in public to influence their thought as well. In 1943, Sophie and other members got arrested and executed by the Gestapo when they found out about their critical remarks against Hitler. Although the guards said what Sophie and her friends did was wrong, they were impressed by the courage and determination the resistors had showed.
