Antigone, a tragedy Ernest Hemingway wrote that “So far, about morals, I know only that what is moral is what you feel good after and what is immoral is what you feel bad after.” If something is moral but is breaking civil law should it be done? What if not doing this act was immorals? Would you let it happen? In the play Antigone, Sophocles portrays Antigone as one who focuses on moral law over civil law due to her self pride and love for her family; These actions lead to her tragic downfall.

Antigone mintions that “ It is my nature to join in love, not hate” Trieing to throw out the idea she is good natured and thats why she loved both her brothers. Before this she talks to her sister and tries to convince her that it is important to show respect to both of their brothers” That must be your excuse, i supposed But as for me, I will bury the brother i love” Meaning she loves her brother and that is why she chose to bury him. Antigone belives in love over doing what the civil law says.
Antigone is portayed as one who focuses on moral law over civil law; These actions lead to her tragic Down fall. At first Antigone is convinced the reason she is dieing is not her fault saying “ You laugh at me Ah friends, can you not wait until i am dead? o thebes, o men many-Charioted in love with fortune… be withnesses for me, denied all pity, unjustify judged!” After that the chorus responds telling her that “You have made your choice your death is the doing of your conscious hand.” The actions Antigone takes lead to a downfall.
