Mrs. Harris

Sophomore speech

“Remember the past, plan for the future, but live for today, because yesterday is gone and tomorrow

may never come.” (Unknown) Like many others, previous to my sophomore I had no idea what high

school would be like, what I was getting myself into and didn't know who I wanted to do with my

future but when this year came around I found that high school isn't all that simple and makes you become

focused on your goals. Without are mistakes of the past we can't learn the lessons that will guide our future. Some of us

make mistakes like procrastination, slacking off or sleeping instead of doing anything else. Although

we all make these simple mistakes with time we fix them through with a positive attitude, great piers

and the help of amazing memories. Many of us share memories like the cat climbing up the tree outside

Mrs. Harris's room that eventually fell, the bird that crashed straight into Mrs. Hancocks window and

all of the sincere sonnets read aloud in class. Although everyone makes mistakes, we learn from them

and grow from the bad experiences and turn them into enjoyable ones.

We have all put aside time to write and present these speeches and now I want to share my

extraordinary sophomore year. It has been amazing to have this class with everyone, you guys always

made me look forward to going to English everyday because everyone always supportive, helpful and

someone usually has hilarious remarks to go with whatever assignment is planned for that day. Without

one of my best friends Natalie, I couldn't have survived this school work. She is such a great friend

who always kept me on track and was willing to teach me anything I didn't understand. With her help

and encouragement, I have been able to maintain extraordinary grades. Charlie and Austin have also

been right there with me too. They both had to put up with annoying texts and phone call about

multiple questions on how to do many different assignments. I want to thank them for being my best

friends during my sophomore year. Along with a great classmates and friends, I've also had fun being

active in my school athletics and events. Overall, my sophomore year has been terrific. “It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves” (William Shakespeare) If you want

something to happen, you have to make it happen. The past and present help guide our future. Your

future is decided by your actions and I know that every students here will be able to succeed in there

life. Roughly two years from this point we will be leaving high school. This means doing our best to

fulfill our dreams but also it is a learning experience. We will all face more sophisticated difficulties

compared to what we are used to now and we just have to remember its all a learning experience and

we just need to do our best to get trough it.

The past, present and future are made up of choices you make, the actions you decide to take

and the goals you set for yourself. Sophomore year has shown me who I am and I wouldn't ever

change it. I hope to see you all in at least one of my classes junior year, thanks for making advanced

English 10 an great experience.

I dreaded the alarm that woke me up at 6:30 in the morning. It was as loud as a screaming toddler that could be heard for miles. I groggily got out of bed and got ready for my first day of school. It was a weird feeling not putting on a uniform like I had been for the past nine years, but I also enjoyed that freedom. The nervousness became more and more intense as I could closer and closer to campus. When we arrived, I got out of the car, and watched my dad drive off to go take my younger sister to school. There was no going back now; I had no other choice than to walk through those doors. I felt like my throat was in my stomach. I noticed some familiar faces, and I walked towards them. While I was approaching my friends, a senior, facing toward me, walked passed. He must have been at least six feet tall, which was incredibly intimidating for me at just over five feet. I was not used to the fact that I’d potentially have classes with these giants. Additionally, the array of new teachers, and having to learn all of their teaching styles and things they did or did not tolerate was hard in…

In middle school, I dreaded high school. It was a whole new world full of challenges that I only had a glimpse of from reading Perks of Being a Wallflower and Catcher in the Rye. I spent much of my time worrying about what high school would be like. But I never imagined that I would become a person that would not only conquer the challenges but also help others face theirs.…

Tonight is bitter sweet for me…bitter because my basketball career is coming to end and it really is hard to say goodbye to something you truly depended on through tough times and good times. Basketball has always been for them as well as my teammates and my coaches…its just hard to say goodbye. The sweet part is that this season isn’t over yet! I would like to thank a few people tonight. First off, I would like to thank God for giving me this opportunity to play basketball and allowing me to play with a torn P.C.L. in my left leg because most people would have to go through surgery or be enable to do sports in general. Words can’t describe how thankful I am for God giving me another chance to play this sport without any surgery. Secondly I would like to thank my dad for getting me into basketball. After a long day at work, you still managed to get me to practices and games. Not only that, I appreciate spending all of your summer weekends for majority of my life traveling everywhere for hundreds of tournaments. I know we both have had our differences and we both don’t always see eye to eye especially when you try to be my coach but you have always believed in me when I felt like nobody did and for that I’m more than thankful. But as I’ve grown, I’ve realized you just wanted to see me succeed and be the best that I can be. A huge, special thank you will definitely be for our coaches. Coach Clayton aka Teacon, you are a second father figure in my life and I’m so blessed that I have gotten the chance to be coached by you since the 4th grade on the court and off. You always believed in us more than anyone else, and you have shown more dedication than anyone I know when it comes around to coaching on the basketball court. Coach Eddie, I don’t know where we would all be if we didn’t have you to condition us. Coach Walker, thank you for always taking stats with my dad and having gum on you during the games! Also thank you to the fans (aka parents) that come out and…

Sophomore year of high school was one of the hardest years of my life. I was at a new school in a new city and had a new family. My mom and I had moved in with her boyfriend because we were getting kicked out of our apartment and had nowhere else to turn. She did not have a job or any second chances. I was forced along a journey that I never could have expected. The next year was the worst of my life.…

so we can never repeat those mistakes again. Now, I know I talked about this earlier, but this quote strikes me hard. "Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it." We are in danger if we don’t learn from the past. The best way to sum this up is a quote from Howard Zinn, “History is important. If you don’t know history it’s as if you were born yesterday. If you were born yesterday, anybody up there in a position of power can tell you anything and you have no way of checking up on it.” When we don’t learn our history, people can tell you all the lies they want to, and you won’t be able to tell the…
