Sorrel Soup Sundays
When Dad Wanted Sorrel Soup
Coming from Riga, Latvia and missing his homeland my dad wanted to be able to enjoy the foods he was used to in his country. One of those was Sorrel Soup. I will write a post on Sorrel however for this post let me just explain that this is a leafy spinach like plant and the leaves are rather tart. In Latvian it is called Skabene and soup made with these leaves is very popular. The soup can be eaten hot or cold. When eaten hot it usually includes some meat and an added spoon of sour cream.

Anyway when I was little Sundays were still Sundays meaning that all of the neighborhood stores in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, New York were closed. It was quiet and people went to church and took quiet Sunday walks. Just as I referred

Whit Sunday falls on the 7th Sunday after Easter and years ago it was a public holiday. Whit Sunday and Whit Monday are important days in the religious calendar otherwise known as the Pentecost. At a time when most of the families in Great Britain were in a celebratory Bank holiday mood Larkin was feeling discontent as he embarked on his train journey from Hull to London.…

They were always kept on a strict schedule and always had to obey their parents. Their schedule consisted of chores, for example, cleaning the floor, washing dishes, feeding the animals, and school, they were able to go and play in the streets, but they were always on a time limit. My mother’s childhood was nothing compared to the ones that children have today. As she would say, “Back in my day, I had chores to do instead of being on a phone and my mom never let me sleepover or go to any type of dances in the village.”…

For as long as long as I can remember, my mother always made tomato gravy on Sundays. My family, and many Italian-American families, calls it "gravy." Don't get this confused with the type of gravy you would put on mashed potatoes — we call that "brown gravy". I could never mistake a Sunday by waking up to the scent of roasted garlic permeating throughout the house. My traditional Sunday morning breakfast consisted of Italian bread dipped in gravy and a meatball or a pork neck. It was a family tradition, from both my parents, to have large dinners with family on Sundays and macaroni with gravy and a side of meat was the staple of the festivities. My family recipe dates back to my great aunt Mary who has passed away before I was born. Since my immediate family moved away when I was young, we couldn't always make it to family functions on Sunday. However, we always celebrated Sundays with gravy. To this day, both my sister and I share the same tradition by making pasta with gravy on Sundays for our families.…

For a lot of families Sunday is the most important day of the week, mine included. At least it was the most important day of the week when I was younger. When I was in elementary school, my family had a Sunday ritual: my mom would cook breakfast, we would go to 10:30 mass and then go to my great-grandmother’s nursing home with my extended family. As I got older and my great-grandmother passed away, we started to go to church less and less, only going to mass about two times a month. As my brother started growing up, our attendance declined even more as my parents often traveled out of town for his basketball, baseball, and football tournaments, making it hard to be present at Sunday mass. For the past couple of years, we have only been going on holidays. With my grandparents being very religious, they do not approve of how little my immediate family and I go to church.…

“I’ve got so many people who have been involved with me in close, intimate ways. And love is how you stay alive, even after you are gone,”. Mitch Albom, the novelist of the novel Tuesdays with Morrie, uses flashbacks to bring out deeper connotation to the story. The book is an account of the relationship between Mitch and his dying professor. At the heart of the narrative is the fourteen Tuesdays that marked the reunion of Mitch and his professor after a period of sixteen years. Essentially, the Tuesdays represent the days that Mitch used to visit his ailing professor after being diagnosed by the terminal ASL. Hence, the days were full of lessons about life. The book epitomizes the final days of Morrie Schwartz and how the days transformed the life of Mitch through the lessons. Hence, Mitch learnt a lot from the professor. In order to epitomize the inherent lessons that he leant from Morrie. Mitch invokes the past through the use of flashbacks. “…we’ve had thirty-five years of friendship. You don’t need speech or hearing to feel that,” . The flashbacks used not only take the reader back to the background of the story but also exposes the true connotation of Mitch’s experience.…

However, the 1920s were not pleasant for Sunday and his wife. While he continued to attract large audiences and led thousands to hit the "sawdust trail" that led to the altars of the tabernacles he had put up for his revivals, these special buildings no longer went up in the largest cities of the North, and he found himself working medium-sized crowds.…

Suppose somebody claimed: “Morrie talked a lot about sickness. In fact, death was obviously on his mind. However, he was always concerned about what happened after death. He was not concerned about how the reality of death affected a person still living.” I disagree with the statement because I know that Morrie is really very concerned about how the reality of death affected people still living. It is easy to tell that he deeply cares about other people by the way that he talks to them and shares his life experiences to help them really embrace their life and everything that comes along with it.…

Tuesdays with Morrie, was based on a true story about friendship and lessons learned. It’s about a sports writer, Mitch and former sociology professor, Morrie, who is in his last days of life after being diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and their rekindled relationship after many years. They first met on the campus grounds at Brandeis University. This never forgotten relationship was simply picked back up at a crucial time in both Mitch’s and Morrie’s life. After seeing his professor in an interview on the show “Nightline”, Mitch is reminded of a promise he made sixteen years earlier to keep in touch. Since the airing of that show, Mitch met with Morrie every Tuesday to learn and understand all the wisdom and lessons of life. These discussion topics included: death, fear, aging, marriage, family, forgiveness, a meaningful life, and so on. This story took place in Morrie’s study in West Newton, Massachusetts. Overall, this book was about Morrie’s and Mitch’s final class: The Meaning of Life.…

Tradition has always been something that my mother and grandmother thought very highly of. Of all the family traditions that families have getting up on Sunday morning having breakfast and being in Sunday school and church on time was a must. We were going to be in Sunday school and church on time even if we didn’t finish eating breakfast and you had better not get in church and say something about being hungry when you had time to eat your breakfast because we got up early on Sunday’s.…
