Sourcing Reflection
This week I worked with the grant writing team to source potential funding opportunities in target areas and revise draft grants before submission. In the process of sourcing, I learned how to use the subscription services FoundationSearch and RelSci. Basically, this week involved a lot of reading and judgement calls. In particular, I was sourcing in the city of Chicago; I did not know how Jewish oriented the city is before this research. Ultimately, we found our organization to be more compatible with the foundations of for-profit companies such as AT&T.

Personally, I learned how valuable and time saving these tools were. But, in order to effectively use them, a person has to be properly briefed on the type of events that require funding. Moreover, although these tools were a great starting point, I had to personally go into their individual websites to verify their specific grant criteria and deadlines to make sure that they are still a viable option for 2017.

In addition to grant writing, Jen is the gatekeeper of all external communication. She revises all formats for letters, mass emails, meeting minutes, presentations, and annual reports in addition to the grants. She mentioned to me how valuable it was as a control mechanism to have all communication verified by her as it ensured the message of the organization remained

“The Scarlet Ibis” is a very interesting story. There are two main characters. One is the older brother. Then there is his little brother Doodle. In the story Doodle is supposed to be a special sign because he was born in a caul. He got his name because instead of crawling forward when he was a baby he would turn around and back up. Doodle’s worst fear was for his brother to leave him. Later they would go to the swamp and the older brother would pick Doodle up and “make” him stand. At the end of the story they find a scarlet ibis in a tree and it falls down and dies, then Doodle buries it. After they go to the swamp and on the way home a storm comes, doodle falls but the brother keeps running and when he goes back for Doodle he finds Doodle dead.…

"An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" is about this southern planter Peyton Farquhar being hanged by the Union Army during the Civil War for trying to burn down Owl Creek Bridge. Ambrose Bierce depicted the entire story as if the rope around Farquhar's neck breaks and that leads to Farquhar falling into the river below, and then escaping back to his farm; where he reunited with his wife. Then at the end of the story, Bierce revealed to the readers that all the events were simply Farquhar's imagination at work in the few seconds between the drop of his rope and his death. In summary, he died and the rope did not break which allowed him to swim down the river.…
