Derham Jr. is representing the 32nd district of Spartanburg County. The 32nd district encompasses Spartanburg county and the cities of Spartanburg, Valley Falls, Mayo, and Converse, South Carolina (usboundary.com). Spartanburg County’s population is a total of 301,463 residents (census.gov). The large population is all too much for a single legislator to represent, so districts are divided among different legislators. Since its founding in 1790, Spartanburg County has grown to be a massive cultural center in South Carolina. There were only 8,800 citizens in Spartanburg County during the beginning of the new county. Over the years the population has skyrocketed. 1930 was the year that Spartanburg County finally reached over 100,000 residents (Wikipedia.com). The new job availability gave way to much…
During the final scene of the movie, the 54th infantry are given the task to be the front line on the charge on a confederate fort in Charles, South Carolina on July 18, 1863 where almost all of the soldiers are killed. The movie starts off with two very religious Irish brothers Connor and Murphy McManus who decide God has chosen them to rid the city of Boston of sinners. They begin their calling merely by accident, when a couple of Russian mob members cause a fight in their buddy Docs bar; resulting in Connor launching a toilet off the fire escape and jumping off to save his brother Murphy. Agent Paul Smecker saw their actions clearly as self-defense and they were let off the hook. During one of their killings they encountered their buddy David Della Rocco who then accompanied them on several other missions until their final killing together where Italian mob boss Papa Joe Yakavetta killed him in front of the brothers. Agent Smecker realized that he agreed with what the brothers were doing and later decided to help them in secret. Connor and Murphy may have lost a dear friend but they gained back a father they thought they’d lost a long time ago. He had been sent to kill them, with no knowledge that they were his sons, but when he heard them say the old family prayer as they mourned Rocco he joined in and that’s when it dawned on all of them. Three months later during Papa Joes hearing the brothers and their father burst in the courtroom and announce themselves to the world with the grand finale of spilling Papa Joes blood on the courtroom floor.…
This battle is a wake up call for Charley and the soldiers when they lose the Battle of Bull Run. Charley experiences horrific things, that he will not be able to erase from his mind. Benjamin Franklin says that some strengths the colonies have are that they want the best for their country (which they consider to be apart of Great Britain), in the sense that they want glory, power, and business for the king. “The inhabitants of are, in common with the other subjects of Great Britain,” Franklin likely sees this as a strength because to be British is to be of importance. This is because the British saw themselves as intelligent and well-mannered people and saw others, for example, the native americans, not as good as the British. To have something in common with a group of people who’re seen as great is a strength.…

Starting from the mysterious sound that woke the laundress every night. Although that was not the only mystery hiding in the story. The laundresses arm had been paralyzed after she left her gaze although I still wonder why. Even though her she was in fear that has nothing to do with her arm paralyzing. The main mystery was why the army men arouse from their grave every night marching through the street. As said in the the story “what you are hearing is the Army of the Dead. They are Confederate soldiers who died in hospital without knowing that the war was over. Each night, they rise from their graves and go to reinforce Lee in Virginia to strengthen the weakened Southern forces." This makes me wonder of why they are headed back to Lee if they know they are dead. Or do…
This film depicts on how a group of young men, lead by Jed Eckert along with his brother matt Eckert and two young women; they find themselves fighting against the Russians, Cubans and Nicaraguan paratroopers that have taken over their small town of Calumet, Colorado. The film basically covers the backdrop of world war III in a smaller scale, where a group known as the wolverines, named after their high school football team, stands low for a few months in the mountains where they are forced to live as outsiders and depend on wild animals to survive. Without any means of communication with the outside population they are unaware of the rules and regulations that have been placed by the invaders; they have raided many of the homes finding out who possessed a threat to them, or believed to own any type of weapon that they could use against them and isolating them into a re-education camp away from their family members. The wolverines begin to rely on each other through their struggle and begin tactics to stop the soviets from executing anymore civilians to try and discourage the wolverines from any further attempts of attacking them. These attempts are failed when they decide a new strategy to directly hunt the wolverines down; When one of the wolverines named Daryl wanders into town and is discovered he is then captured and threatened by the enemy to torture his family if he did not help them track down the rest of the wolverines, he is later discovered during an attempt to eliminate them by the foes, and is executed by his own for the betrayal. They are later attacked by the guerillas in a surprise air attack eliminating most of the group, Jed and Matt would go and directly attack the soviets as a diversion while the remanding two go in search of the free America across the mountains.…
The ways and reasons in which the slave trade in colonial Charleston, South Carolina was so relevant are surprisingly interesting. The slave trade was important economically and capitalistically speaking: the economy highly depended on the slave trade and was literally dominated by it in some states. Besides the economy, other reasons of its importance were implied in politics and business: what made it really big in Charleston and in South Carolina in general was that slaves ended constituting the majority which means that slavery was focussed much more in this state than in any other one. Another reason we can mention why the slave market was so alive in South Carolina and also well present in other states and islands is because whites considered the blacks to be inferior to them, considering an African to be the 3/5 of a human being at that time and so they gave themselves the right to run the African slave trade without hesitating, and it is amazing to know how the slave trade was able to last for so long before it was officially banned and abolished through politics and war, only 145 years ago in 1865 (common knowledge). Charleston has clearly been the slave trade leader in America during all that time and the upcoming explanation of this will let others know if they should agree or not with this argument.…
The plot of the movie starts two weeks before reelections. The President of United States gets involved in a sex scandal, so his team reaches out to Conrad Brean, a well-known public relations expert. Conrad helps them create a bigger story that will drive public’s attention away from the scandal. In collaboration with Winfred Ames, Conrad comes to an idea to create a fake war with Albania. In order to create the story more believable he hires Stanley Moss, a Hollywood producer who creates a fake video footage of the war in Albania and decides to spread a rumor of a suitcase bomb located in Canada. The plan setbacks when Senator John Neal, who is also running in the elections, appears on the news and declares that the war is over. At that point Stanley comes up with the most “realistic proof” of the war and present the nation their hero. A soldier, a patriot named “old shoe” for his mild character, a man…
Because I know I’m not writing this essay for someone who hasn’t seen the movie, I’m not going to describe every single second in this summary, just the most important parts. The movie is about the historical event: the American Revolutionary War. The main character, Benjamin Martin, whom I like to call Martin rather than Benjamin and so I will, has fought in the French – Indian war, also known as the Seven Years’ war or the War of the Conquest. However, he regrets his brutal deeds, so during the revolutionary war he wants to take care of his family without being involved in it. His two oldest sons, Gabriel and Thomas don’t agree with his decisions: they want to fight. When Gabriel secretly signs himself up to fight the war, Martin is furious, although he can’t do anything about. Time passes, but when suddenly on a normal evening they hear a battlefield coming closer and closer, a wounded soldier enters their house: it’s Gabriel. The next morning, after the battle’s been fought, Martin and his family treat/help all the wounded soldiers, both British and American. But when British Colonel William Tavington comes by, he’s not so happy with this. To punish Martin and his family, he burns the house, and for being a betrayer, he wants to hang Gabriel. Thomas tries to stop him and gets shot. From this moment, Martin is wildly active. Gabriel gets back to rejoin his squad while Martin gets in charge of the South Carolina militia and travels from town to town to get men to fight with him. They win (almost) every battle by the use of the guerilla techniques: standing behind a tree/bush and from there attack the enemy (the British were used to formal fighting). When British general Lord Cornwallis hears about the attacs on this men, he orders Tavington to take Martin and his militia down. Tavington then does everything for information. When an old friend of Martin snitches to Tavington where Martin’s…
The cruelty of the war is implied throughout the story by the action of the young sniper. Though he had been used to look at death, he later becomes bitter and disgusted looking at the people he has killed, especially his brother forced by the cruelty of the war. A numerous number of women, children, and the elderly were killed in this civil war. For example, in the story it said that the reason he joined the war might be, because of his youth and “the cold gleam of the fanatic on his eyes” (O’Flaherty 212). “There was no pain—just a deadened sensation, as if the arm had been cut off” (O’Flaherty 213). This…
The film starts in the late sixties when the son, Gabriel Sawyer, attends a high school anti -war rally in which an American flag is burned. Henry Sawyer, a Korean War Veteran, is deeply insulted by this show of disrespect. He feels his son has embarrassed him with this show of rebellion against everything the father believes in. Instead of trying to understand his son’s point of view and feelings on the matter, he lashes out at him causing a verbal and physical altercation. Henry cannot believe that his own son could be so different from himself, when in fact this is very common during the teenage years. His angry rejection drove his son to leave the home, never to return. I promised myself I would not let my pride come before my relationship with my own boys. The lesson I learned is that rebellion is a part of growing up and is not direct reflection of my parenting skills.…
The movie was about the independence fighters during the American War that was led by a man named Macario Sakay. Until today, there have been many misconceptions whether this insurgence was truly patriotic or merely a bandit’s doing. This movie emphasizes that the movement was truly a revolution and not just banditry.…
