The most important aspect in managing a disaster situation is preparedness. The simulation Disaster in Franklin County highlights the role of public health personnel, with emphasis on the public health nurse because the nurse is often a first responder to such a disaster. This helps to examine the roles, actions, coping methods, and techniques used by a nurse in a disaster scenario.…
The effects of Hurricane Georges in Louisiana included $30.1 million in damage and three deaths. Forming from a tropical wave over the Atlantic Ocean, Georges attained a peak intensity of 155 mph (250 km/h) on September 20, 1998. Over the following several days, the storm tracked through the Greater Antilles and later entered the Gulf of Mexico on September 28, the Category 2 storm made landfall in Mississippi before dissipating on October 1. Before landfall, about 500,000 residents in Louisiana evacuated from low-lying areas. The mayor of New Orleans declared a state of emergency to allow federal assistance into the state. After nearly 1.5 million people were urged to evacuate coastal areas, officials described the evacuation as "probably the largest [...] we have ever achieved".[1]…
In the 1930s area’s like Texas, Kansas and others were hit by hundreds of storms all these storms together made up one huge natural disaster It was the biggest natural disaster in Americas history. In the 1900s to 1930s, so many families in listed parcels of land and the states’s These families had built farms plus built a life where they were . The threat of earthquake is definitely present in the area. Schirber (2005) outlines the probability of this threat “Researchers have calculated a 20 to 70 percent probability that southern California will be hit by a large earthquake in the next 30years. The forecast is based on the frequency of past events.” We have assessed this threat and find its level to be a twenty five in terms of probability and severity which is the highest possible score, which makes this a high priority threat. The organization is located in a very hot, dry desert region which makes is susceptible to fire. The risk of fire got a rating of fifteen on our assessment making this a high priority threat. The risk of flood would not usually be considered a major threat in a dry area but we gave this threat a rating of fifteen making it a high priority threat. The risk of earthquakes in the area makes the organization susceptible to flood because earthquakes can break dams or levees along a river. The water from the river or the reservoir would then flood the area; damaging buildings. The threat of tornados received a twelve in our assessment making it a medium priority threat. We based this rating on the fact that the region averages about 20 tornadoes or water spouts per year according to the National Weather Service. The other environmental threats we analyzed were landslides, and hurricanes. Each of…

Have you ever wondered if storms were created by people? Well some scientists do. People in the United States believe that the President or the Government created storms. There was a recent study about whether they really did create the storms such as Hurricane Sandy. In August of 2008, The Telegraph reported that US scientists “believe they can weaken the strength of tropical storms and steer them off course using a range of methods that include spraying fine particles into hurricanes or cooling the seawater in areas where they form.” October 30th US NEWS had published a “conspiracy theory” that alleged Obama had used HAARP to engineer Hurricane SANDY in order to guarantee his re-election to a second term.…

To this day, California has been in a drought. The governor, Jerry Brown is struggling to create policies to prevent people from using large amounts of water. He has made proposals to reduce the water use in California by building tunnels under the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta to increase the supply of water. One of the reasons California is in a drought is because of our history of dealing with the gold miners using hydraulic mining to mine gold, and damming the Tuolumne River to provide water for San Francisco. Although the use of of water has benefitted farmers and cities, it has not been in the best interest of the state because it has harmed the Native Americans and the environment.…

Two years ago, when I was in high school, our social science teacher told us there had a serious drought in Southern California. Most of us did not know anything about it and we felt so surprised about this new. Today, when I heard this new again, I can’t believe that the drought still exist in Southern California, I thought it already solved by the government because it had been two years when I heard this new. From most of my research, it said that it had been fourth year for California to have the drought. Water supply is no longer enough in California, our government was trying to think a best useful way to solve this problem. Some people think that desalination is a good solution because it cost less money and can also recycle the energy.…
