Not only is this its main purpose but it is also its main difference from other combs. As with any other comb, this type of comb also aims to hold up the hair of the person using it, but how it differs is that the height of the comb changes depending on the height of the person using it and that of her “partner,” when attending a social event.
What would it be like to use it? First of all, it cannot be used with loose hair or hair with ringlets, as it has to be tied up in a bun so that the teeth of the comb have enough strength to support the shawl.
It is also important to know that it is not compulsory to be used by all women in events such as the processions of Good Friday or at Weddings, as is traditional in Southern Spain, however it is compulsory for the Royal Family as it is in their Protocol.
The mantilla (shawl) and the comb are normally used on Good Friday as a sign of mourning and respect for the death of Jesus Christ. There are different types of shawls and colours but during Holy Week the women would only use black ones. In other events such as marriages or bullfights, other colours might be used. Normally the brighter shawls are used by the younger women and the thicker and darker ones by the
