My research question is “does being spanked as a child affect your behavior toward authority?” My interviews questions consisted of:
1. How old are you?
2. How often were you spanked when in trouble?
3. Who spanked you the most
4. How is your relationship with (whoever spanked you the most) today
5. Where did you grow up
6. What is one behavior you were spanked the most for?
7. After being spanked did you do (said behavior) again?
8. Do you have siblings (how many)
9. Are your sibling/s spanked?
10. How old are your siblings?
11. How is your sibling/s relationship/s with your parents?
12. What is your opinion on disciplining children?
For my research I wanted to see if over generations if disciplining children has changed and how that affects the general attitude toward authority. My hypothesis is that the younger generation is not being spanked and therefore results in a more defiant attitude toward authority which leads to higher rates in criminal activity, whereas my generation having been spanked has led to a more respectful attitude toward authority. I define spanking as a hit on the bottom, there are many ways to be spanked but I chose to focus on spanking with a hand to the bottom.
The people that I interviewed were between the ages of 18-21, and they had a variety of siblings with the most common being 1 older sibling and 1 younger sibling. They all grew up in fairly rural areas and in relatively small towns. All of my interviewees were spanked as children and the most commonly were spanked most of the time when in trouble. One common response to their siblings being spanked was their older siblings and they themselves were spanked but their younger siblings were not. I find this interesting because the average younger sibling age is 7 years old and the average older sibling age is 24 years old. This data runs along with my hypothesis that the younger generation is not being disciplined by spanking. I find
