The effect of spanking children in physical, cognitive, and psychosocial development in children Spanking is a form of discipline that involves hitting a child using stick, punching, slapping, as well as any form of abuse to a child in order get hurt (Kovac, 2014). The form of spanking to children can affect children in different ways such as physical development, cognitive development and psychosocial development. Cognitive development in early childhood refers to the ability of a how a child can form some ideas when they are growing up, and how they advance their skill in a new environment. It is difficult to count the number of neurons of a child, but theories like Jean Piaget, Erickson and Lev Vygotsky’s come up with different ideas on how children are different in the way they think compared with adults during cognitive development (Klausmier,20140). …show more content…
The Piaget theories of cognitive development said that learning is based on physical, psychosocial, and cognitive development, and our environment that we live including the people that surround us; but if harsh punishment is introduced to children it can slow down cognitive development, and this results in poor learning especially in school activities (Takeesha 2012).
Jean Piaget came up with an idea of reflex behavior, whereby a child will not think about what they are going to do, but they follow their own ideas that just pop up from their own mind. For example, babies begin to develop to see things permanent on the other hand, if children’s spank they will become shy, and develop less attention on their own basic needs, and therefore children will not use their own reasoning instead they rely on what they have been told by some people which my lead them into wrong direction (Takeesha,
2012).
In psychosocial development, Erikson come up with an idea of trust vs mistrust whereby a child can develop trust to others people who treat them well. The child feel secure with the people that are around with them, but if they will not treat them well, for example spanking them, they will start to develop mistrust and feel insecure with the people who are around, they will also expect people to be mean to them every time (Harvey,1992). Physical development is the changes in the brain, growth of the body and the nervous system. If a child is spanked or yell, their brain will not develop well and their bodies will not grow healthy, they will also score poor in exam. ’There is no study that I have ever done that found a positive consequence of spanking’’ Gershoff said, most of us will stop what we are doing if somebody hits us’’ (Kovac 2014 p.1). This also applies to children if they are spanked they will stop what they have been doing. Parents must create a good environment to children without abusing them, for example research by name Piaget, Vygotsky’s talk about how environment can influence the children. When they are growing up, he said that the things they can see around and the people they interact with either in school or home compound will influence their early learning (Karpova, 2014). They will also learn on how to distinguish between the behavior that can be rewarded with those that cannot be rewarded. If a child get rewarded with something that they did good, the child will start doing it again because a child will be more social and if they spank they can start to shy away. “Dr. Murray carry take some research about how spanking effect children and found that children’s who can be spank are most like to develop violence to solve some problem, their self-esteem will be low compare with others children’s ‘’(Romano,2017) . Children’s can start at early age to pay attention to what they have been taught and continue until they reach the age that enable them to go to school. They continue to develop that behavior of paying attention to what is being thought in school and this enable them to retain information which assist them in school work while others may have difficulties in maintaining attention this might be because there were being yell or punch while they were still young which make them to lose concentration (Strawinski,2017) When children are taught in a right way rather than being spank whenever they do mistake, they will absorb information easily and experience different things in the world, for example “Jean Piaget come up with different ways on how children can learn’’ such as schemas, assimilation, accommodation, and equilibration. Schemas is a different kind of knowledge and how to obtain that knowledge for example if a child has been with a small dog, the child will develop knowledge of a dog being small and has four legs and if a child see another big dog, the child will start to develop a new idea about that big dog (Strawinski,2017). The process of assimilation is taking ideas into what already has been existing for example seeing a dog and labeling it has dog is a good example of assimilation. Another part is accommodation in which involve changing what is existing into a new informing for example a child can develop new schemas in this process (Edwards,2014). The last one is equilibration in which piaget develop an idea that children are trying to balance in between schemas and assimilation, in this process a child start to develop new behavior as they grow up, for example if a child was being discipline through spanking every time when they do a mistake the child will become more aggressive and adopt that behavior of being violent to others children’s. Equilibrium also can show has on how a child can move from one stage to another stage as they grow up into adulthood, and so a child need not to be punish harshly for them to develop physical, psychosocial, and cognitive development (Edwards,2014). To avoid children’s having problem during cognitive development you must give them a clear warning whenever they did a mistake, we must know that our children are sinner through predisposition of making mistake, this children’s may inherit from us or from other generation all the way back during older days (Edwards,2014). A child should not be embarrassed in front of their friends, whenever you want to correct when they did a mistake, you can take in private room and teach how bad he/she has done a mistake, but don’t yell or spank when everyone is around. Let them do know you still trust and love them (Sabrina and Elisa,2017). In my future implication, I will be calm to children’s whenever they did mistake, in that way I will find another solution on how I can make them to be away that doing that is not something good, I will also use role model for example, if a child hit another kid, I will tell her/she that even though you are angry it is not something good to hit your sister and in that situation, the child will learn his mistake instead of spanking or punching, and you can be role model. (Sabrina and Elisa,2017). If I become a teach in future I will make sure to teach parents on how effective spanking can lead some problem to children like for example, I will teach them some negative consequence on how spanking can affect physical, cognitive, and psychosocial development in children’s (Sabrina and Elisa,2017). In my conclusion, I will recommend every parent, to ensure that their children are being treat well at home so that they will develop trust instead of mistrust, let them also to know that they are being love so that they can develop self-esteem. (Harvey,1992).
