To spank or not to spank, that is a question. This is a question many parents will ask of themselves, me included. I am the mother of a beautiful toddler and she can be very difficult and often quite ornery sometimes. Not a day goes by, that I do not worry if I am making the best decisions for her upbringing and I worry how the decisions I make will impact her overall life. Do I follow in my parents footsteps?…
Simple physical punishments; such as pinching, flicking, and spanking, are carried out on us at a very young age, and all throughout life. Our parents are here to discipline us, to teach us the difference of right and wrong. When we first misbehave, our parents might tell us to “knock it off” or “stop” and they may raise their voice when asserting these commands. We sometimes stop when told to, but sometimes we ignore their commands and keep misbehaving repeatedly. This is where physical punishment comes into play. A form of physical punishment would and will be carried out on us. At first it may be a simple punishment, but gradually the punishments intensify. Once a punishment has been carried out, many of us become cloaked in fear of punishment and from this fear we learn not to do that mistake again. Simple punishment is used for the good of children and to discipline them, “Dr. David Safir, father of five and grandfather of five, CNN asked him to talk to us about his views on spanking. He said he was spanked as a child, spanked his own children when necessary and believes the occasional use of physical punishment -- not abuse -- can be an effective tool for parents” (Zeidler) If these simple punishments are executed out…
Before we dive too deep into this subject, the term spanking may need to be defined. The definition of spanking is different to each person. The one that will be used throughout this paper is from Merriam Webster. To strike, especially on the buttocks with an open hand. This means that spanking does not include using a belt on a child, or a paddle. Spanking also means no permanent physical damage was sustained during the encounter. If damage is sustained, then it becomes abuse, which is a serious crime and should not be taken lightly. The line between abuse and punishment will be discussed in depth later in the essay. No…
Spanking is a form of corporal punishment that is commonly used to discipline children all around the world. This form of punishment typically consists of an adult striking the child’s bottom or hand as a reaction to unwanted behavior. There are many arguments that are made on whether a child should be spanked or not, many people tend to believe it’s fair while other believe it’s simply wrong. Those who do not believe in spanking say spanking is a form of child abuse. That it shows children the idea of violence at a young age. So the question is whether spanking will cause the child to be a violent individual, if spanking will harm children mentally and physically, and if it’s a harm to their health and development later on in life.…
Slap, bang, crack! There goes another spanking. Maybe you think that spanking helps prevent bad and misbehavior from children, but did you think about how it doesn’t help them? Spanking should be illegal in the united states. There are people/guardians that abuse the children everyday because they take it too far. Spanking should not be provided in the united states because of the incidences that are provided here.…
Spanking is the act of smacking the buttocks of a child with an opened hand. Some parents adopt this form of corporal punishment as a back up to non-physical discipline. The law should not ban the act of spanking a child in parenting because it is not a form of abuse. Parents should be free to spank their children appropriately, at the right time and for the right reasons, to create an understanding for what is acceptable and what is not. Definitely, spanking is an effective parenting tool.…
As a child, I was guided in different ways. If I acted up, I got a spanking. If I was good, then I got rewarded. I believe that children should be taught with positive behaviors. If a child acts up, don’t jump down their throat, talk to them. If a child hits, I remove them from the setting and talk to them about why we…
Corporal punishment is lawful and acceptable as long as it is done for the reason of correction or for discipline. It is considered reasonable as long as the child is at an appropriate age and the method used is acceptable, and the child is able to understand the punishment. For spanking to be effective it should be painful, this ensures that the child will not repeat the behavior they were earlier corrected for. Some parents justify spanking their children as a necessary means to modify a child’s behavior. For example, if your child required a shot from the doctor due to necessary treatment, chances are the child will cry upon receiving the shot. However, this is required to help the child. Some feel that spanking is the same way; and a necessary evil to help the child it is intended to cause pain, and to modify behavior.…
They say there is no reason to spank. Most parents often are too tired and exhausted to take the time to speak to their children and explain things. If there is an issue and the child is inconsolable, they go to their room for a time out. They have been using the love and logic method with tremendous success. The rules for spanking should be never spank a child.…
Parents have always struggled with ways to appropriately discipline their children, especially in modern culture. Several years ago there would have been no question about acceptable forms of punishment. Today people can not parent their children the way they want to. There are radical groups out there that are dictating the way we care for them, and this is not right. When did society become so manipulative over our parental duties? Even in today’s society, a good old-fashioned spanking is still a beneficial form of punishment.…
During my dad’s childhood when he would misbehave he would get a swat on the bottom or sometimes a belt to the bottom if that’s what his dad was feeling that night. When being asked why he didn’t spank my sister or I his answer was, “Because it hurt me immensely and I would never put you or your sister through that pain and if I did I don't think I could ever forgive myself”. Children who get swatted or spanked grow up to be understanding like my dad or more aggressive. Usually the case is that the child becomes a more aggressive adult. Researchers at Columbia University say that children who are spanked as early as 5…
“The recidivism rate for misbehavior by a 2-year-old is about 50% within two hours. It 's 80% within the same day. And that applies to whether it 's just saying no, removing the child, or spanking a child” Mitchell said (25). Children are going to cry, pout, scream, etc. no matter what form of punishment you ensue and chances are they will be back doing it eventually. They might do it again the same day, week, or even month but learning their lesson doesn’t always happen the first time. Spanking is like giving punishment without a reason why. If emotions get a chance to calm themselves, with time, parents can talk things out and a lesson has a chance of being learned better then in a whapping screaming match. Mitchell added, “It doesn 't take a whole new parent to avoid corporal punishment. Parents are doing dozens and dozens of things besides spanking, even parents who are doing some spanking. If they just left out the spanking, they 'd be doing the alternatives, and their child would be better off” (25). A simple search on Google for good forms of child discipline can give any parent better ideas. It may sound cheesy but “putting yourself in the child’s shoes” can be the best thing when it comes between what’s right and wrong. It’s always best to start from the beginning when having a child, but it’s never too late to start changing ways. Dr. Esther K.…
Is corporal punishment an effective way of disciplining children? Corporal punishment is a violation inflicted on children, teachers, and others in names of “discipline” which is experienced by a large majority of children in many states worldwide. In the United States, there are laws protecting children from physical abuse, including at school and home; nevertheless, most American parents think spanking is an appropriate method of discipline for children. There are some countries that have passed anti-spanking laws such as Germany, Sweden, and others, but other countries do not have any support against spanking. Spanking children can leave physical scars, affect mental problems, and be ineffective in that children do not understand which is…
Jared Pingleton who is a clinical psychologist says “We won’t go wrong if we exercise a firm and consistent hand with a soft and loving heart.” There is a difference between spanking your child out of love and getting out of control and physically abusing your child. Spanking can be an effective discipline option for a parent to get their children away from negative behaviors and guide them to be responsible, healthy, and happy adults. Properly understood and administered, spanking is most effective as a deterrent to undesirable behavior for younger preschoolers (but never for infants). The reason why spanking should never be used for infants is because they don’t know exactly what they are doing right or wrong half the time. Spanking should be completely out of the picture before adolescence as there are other types of consequences. There is a proper philosophy and approach to spanking and it is very important. Punishment and discipline are very opposites. Punishment is motivated by anger and usually focuses on the past this is NO good. Discipline on the other hand is motivated by love for the child and focuses on the future, which is the proper…
On the other hand, spanking should be considered punishable by the law because a child should never be hit for doing something wrong. As stated in a law for the State of Arizona, “ A parent or guardian or other person entrusted with the care and supervision of a minor or incompetent person may use reasonable and appropriate physical force upon the minor or incompetent person when and to the extent reasonably necessary and appropriate to maintain discipline (Spanking Laws).” Several parents of today would disagree with this reason to not spank their kid. Never is not the word that should be used in the statement towards spanking. Talking to a kid about what they did wrong sometimes isn’t enough. Taking action of something that was not okay or something they have done several times is not a bad thing. According to a study done by Parenting.com, “ 74% of mothers believe spanking is acceptable for kids ages 1 to 3.”(O’Callaghan) Studies not only help a parent realize what’s actually right, they state the facts as well. In all honesty, the law should never punish a parent for how they believe to discipline their…
