Speaking White Essay

Ever been accused of speaking white? Speaking white is what this generation refers to as proper English. This involves using proper grammar and speaking etiquettes to convey many ideas one may have. The mindset that a specific shade of color is higher so therefore more privileged than another color. Of course over time the world has tried to make that right but since some of us are raised by the same people who believed in the power of color, this change has been delayed. Speaking white is a belief that has many people thinking they are lesser than what they are because they do not speaking a certain way. Speaking white is a term that qualifies a certain tone of maturity, common sense, and proper English. According to urban dictionary, speaking white is “How a typical Caucasian American with a suit and tie would speak.” This means that the typical Caucasian American sounds very proper without any slang and each letter is enunciated with care. And in addition to no slang, there also aren't any contractions such as "aren't", "isn't". This means that if in an environment dominated by Afro-American, if one was to speak without the usual slang or improper English, they would be section off to “speaking white” or “not black enough”. This has left permanent marks in the lives of individuals who are a part of darker shade because language leaves mark on who a person is. To be labeled as not black enough is like challenging the fact that a person received the heritage of insolence from ancestors. But these so called insolent ancestors are the ones who spoke white enough to work their way up to power and make a difference. They used their culture as way to get through the rough times and survive what life threw at them. This makes it understandable that someone would be classified as speaking white when they are being precise, articulate and concise with their manners and
