Special Day Observation
After observing the 4th and 5th grade Special Day Class, I asked the principal Mr. Valencia if there was a possibility to observe a 4th or 5th grade General Education class. He set up my observation in Mr. Garcia’s class. It was a pleasure to be there since he was recognized as the Teacher of the Year, a few years ago. The observation was conducted during the whole school day on October 20, 2017 from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. This is a big class with 14 boys and 15 girls, a total of 29 students. The classroom has a neat environment with a couple of boards displaying the class assignments. One of the boards had banners of different universities and a short composition about it. The other board exhibited web maps of Charlotte’s Web the book they had been …show more content…
The teacher then explained to me that at the end of the month the table with the highest number of points gets a prize (stickers, pencils, erasers). During my observation I was able to see how the class work most of the time independently and how the teacher lectured the whole class. He explained the activities and went to the back of the classroom where there is a desk with a couple of chairs one for the teacher and one for a child. He uses this area to review homework and works with students who have questions. Mr. Garcia was covering almost the same topics than in the special education classroom, but more complex and independently. The class is learning the time tables too, but they are already working with the time table number 12, while in special education the class was working in different tables according to the children capability. Mr. Garcia’s class is dynamic full of energy. The class is counting money to but using word problems. There is a lot of critical thinking in this class. The children must use their own words to retell a story. They are using brain storm ideas, web maps, and prewriting to create a

In the class there are 41 fluent English-speaking students and 23 ELL students. The ELL students are divided between ESOL levels 3-5. Mr. Rodriguez does not assign special seats assignments for the ELL learners; however, he suggests they sit with a battle-buddy. The battle-buddy can either be a student that speaks fluent English or has more experience in the program. The teacher’s desk is situated behind the students and all the student sit in rows. It is your typical teacher centered classroom, although Mr. Rodriquez never sits at his desk. He is constantly at the front of the class or walking around room. As for materials, Mr. Rodriguez has textbooks, leadership student handout booklets, video/audio, and the word wall. Since the materials…

In this cartoon. the teacher is seen in all black clothes, she has a long nose, and she has the biggest smile on her face. The school board tells teachers what their students need to learn by the end of the year and it becomes the teacher's job to carry that job to teach the students. Although sometimes teachers understand that it takes a bit longer for a few students to fully understand a topic, some still fly through the subject so that they have enough time to fit others in. Teachers often have to teach the kids the same topic, the same way. The students are given the same worksheets because teachers do not make the student their own specific lesson, due to the fact that it would take to long. It affects the children because some students have an easier time learning by hands on activities, instead of sitting in seat and taking notes the whole period. However, other students may be able to take notes and be fine. As seen in the cartoon, the children are not smiling or laughing, instead they are frowning while writing on paper. This lets you know that those kids learn better by physically doing activities, especially kids in lower grades.…

As the school cleared out in an incredible 7 minutes, teachers and few students were left in the school gathering their things. We stopped in a Language Arts teacher’s class. The teacher, Mrs. Kelly Pederson, who looked as if she was going to rip all of her hair out and possibly already got a head start, gladly spoke to us not only about her IB students but about her 9th grade students as well.…

There were two Caucasian students, seven African-American students, and six Mexican students. Mrs. Brodie was the teacher and Ms. Johnson was the teacher assistant. The classroom was large and there was plenty of space for the children to move about. The classroom structure was very similar to that of the 3-year-old classroom that I observed in my first field observation. There was also a carpet on the floor for circle time and the classroom was divided up into centers as well. The centers were clearly labeled. Some of the centers included reading, art, science, manipulatives, and blocks. As I stated before it was very similar to the 3-year-old classroom set-up. The classroom was filled with print and there were many different aspects of cultural references which included posters in the Spanish language and books that represented the different diversity of all of the students. The classroom was like the 3-year-old classroom amplified. I am thinking that maybe because the school is state funded that it why they do have so many more materials than a regular preschool classroom. The science area even had a telescope in the center. The children knew what it was and what it was used…

I was very excited about this assignment. I enjoy going into the classroom and being able to observe what is going on and how everyone interacts with each other. I decided to attend a classroom at an expulsion school that has 4th- 12th grade students. Every student has a different story of why they are they at this school, some students made a mistake and want to earn their way back to their school site and some do not care about school and to not try to work towards anything positive. The staff explained that working there is a challenge and takes a special type of person that can adjust to a variety of challenging students and still try to accomplish a positive learning environment. I decided to observe the 8th grade history class for an entire chapter. I wanted to get the full experience from the start of the lesson to testing and see how the whole lesson is presented, delivered and received from start to finish.…

Dr. Florece’s afternoon class was composed of 33 Information Technology (IT) majors from the College of Computer studies, most of them were on their first year at Ateneo de Naga University. The observation starts at exactly 1:15 in the afternoon, covering the student’s behavior before class. ZC11 was dismissed earlier by their Theology class teacher. Since they were a blocked section, they waited for their next class in the same room. Student’s behavior were the typical like waiting for the teacher outside the classroom, some were chatting with their friends, some were doing their assignments and some were just doing nothing. Minutes passed and the same student behavior was observed. I overheard some students saying, “sana mayo si ma’am, yaon daw si ma’am?” but another student uttered, “iyo, yaon si ma’am nahiling ko subago” a typical conversation for a student who is waiting for his teacher. But to my analysis, is there something with a teacher that made students say and think as such. I waited for the teacher to arrive and continue observing the student’s behavior.…

When they first entered the classroom, students on the left side of the classroom are sitting quietly waiting for the lesson to start while students on the right are talking loudly, trying to mingle around with each other. Immediately, Gerald walks to the left side to find a seat and whisper to Jonathon, telling him that students on the right will most probably be very playful and are those who do not do their works. We observed a reading activity during Language I class. When we reached there, the activities had just began. The teacher, Laura, had organized a reading activity where she was going to read a short story, “Waiting for the police”, and students had to follow the reading. Although they should bring the story print, the teacher had some extra copies just in case. So, she began reading it in a loud and clear voice, appropriate for the level of the students, she tried to act each of the characters in order to avoid boredom and motivate their students. Students were organized in lockstep, in that way all of them could see her who was reading at the front of the class.…
