A NICU nurse is a Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse. These nurses take care of either premature babies or babies that are born that need medical attention right away. Nurses working in this unit will be giving the baby oxygen if needed and feed the intravenously also if needed, to help the baby gain weight. A nurse will help the parents by explaining how to care the newborn, explain the baby’s condition and any questions they may have. Other duties that this nurse may do includes, monitoring the babies condition, administer drugs that are needed for the newborn, record the progress, change the baby’s diaper, and hold and comfort the baby when it is in distress ( Johnson-NICU). This certain nursing job will also take a good amount of schooling in order to become a NICU nurse. First, the nurse will have to pass their NCLEX. During this time, you can work as an RN, and begin to work with neonatal patients before you take a certification exam for neonatal nursing. This exam will be through the Association of Critical Care Nursing. Once this is finished, the nurse is officially an NICU nurse
