Specific Ethical Issues In Future Counseling Practice

Specific ethical issues that may be challenging for me and how I might deal with these issues in future counseling practice I have identified three specific ethical issues that may prove challenging to me in future counseling practice. They are 1) countertransference, 2) not becoming non-defensive if an ethics complaint is lodged against me, and 3) remaining fastidious in regards to record keeping. That I am aware of these matters and their possibility of arising means I am one step ahead of ethical blind spots. Numbers two and three can be managed by striving for excellence as a counselor and by not procrastinating or delaying the inevitable. When personal and professional boundaries are instituted and followed a counselor can ensure that boundary crossings are kept to a minimum while all but eradicating boundary violations. Boundaries prevent a counselor from stepping onto the slippery slopes that all too often inevitably lead to ethical violations. Without clear and unambiguous lines of professional borders, it will be difficult to discern where the counselor ends and the client begins and vice versa.
