Speckled Band Sparknotes
In “The Adventure of the Speckled Band,” Sir Arthur Conan Doyle portrayed hope for a young woman, Helen Stoner, as she attempted to determine the cause of her sister’s death. Helen was involuntarily courageous as she endured the death of her twin sister in the year of 1881. The cause of her death was still undiscovered; although, numerous professionals strived to explore the incident. Helen solicited assistance from two tremendously intelligent men, a detective and a doctor, to help her solve this conundrum. The story occurred in the Roylott Stoke Maron Manor during April of 1883. It was terribly early in the morning when Helen Stoner worked up the audacity to elucidate her situation to Sherlock Holmes, a renowned detective. He demonstrated his observances quite plausibly; for he was indeed a perceptive man. His assistant, Dr. Watson, expressed his cooperative behavior in resolving the mystery. The solitary individual who could prevent the men from solving the case was an aggressive man named Dr. Grimesby Roylott, Helen Stoner’s stepfather. Helen’s mother had passed …show more content…
He saw an object out of the bend of his eye which he swatted at it with his cane. After some time had passed, a shriek came from Dr. Roylott’s chamber; then, everything was soundless. Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes stepped softly to Dr. Roylott’s room. As the approached the door, they pressed it open, cautiously. They directed their eyes toward the chair in which Dr. Grimesby Roylott was seated. He was motionless with a yellow band with brown speckles, tightly wrapped around his head. Once the band moved, Holmes saw the eyes in which he cried that it was the deadly swamp adder from India. The remaining characters were somewhat blue, yet happy as they were able to solve the mystery. After all, they prevented Helen from confronting her own demise. Everyone felt uplifted that Sherlock Holmes had solved yet another

As Helen Stoner sits before him for her consultation he is observing everything and proves this by asking her if she took the train that morning. As she is shocked by his accurate theory Sherlock Holmes responds with, “I observe the second half of a return ticket in the palm of your left glove,” giving his client a glimpse of his observation process (Doyle, The Adventure of the Speckled Band 1). She goes on to explain her own theory of how she believes her sister has died of pure fear. However, Holmes is not quite satisfied with these results because she forgets to speak about her stepfather, “’he is a hard man,’ she said, ‘and perhaps he hardly knows his own strength,” as he notices her wrist displays an imprint of a hand (Doyle, The Adventure of the Speckled Band 5). In “The Blanched Soldier,” Sherlock demonstrates the same observation method as Mr. James Dodd sits before him for the interview. He begins to take some guesses about where Dodd is from by saying, “from South Africa, sir, I perceive,” “Imperial Yeomanry, I fancy,” “Middlesex Corps, no doubt,” all were accurate, giving James the same shock as Helen Stoner (Doyle, The Blanched Soldier 1). James did most of the investigation himself before meeting with Sherlock, while he trusted his every word he listened carefully…

“Violence, in truth, recoils upon the violent, and the schemer falls into the pit, which he digs for another.” -- Sherlock Holmes. In the story, “ The Adventure of the Speckled Band,” written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes (a detective) and Dr. John Watson (his assistant) were investigating a case. It involved a young lady named Helen Stoner, whose sister, Julia Stoner, has died mysteriously. The murderer turned out to be their step-father, Dr. Grimesby Roylott. In return for this wrongdoing, the consequence for Dr. Roylott was his life; he was bitten by a snake he used to poison Julia Stoner. What happened to Dr. Roylott correlates with the saying that was previously stated, because what he did to Julia eventually came back and bit him in the rear end.…
