The Adventure of The Speckled Band
The story “The Adventure of The Speckled Band,” written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, took place at Stock Moron, the Roylott’s estate in April 1883. Helen Stoner came to the detective, Sherlock Holmes and his assistant, Dr. Watson. She felt threatened experiencing the same occurrences that her sister did prior to her mysterious demise. Helen was concerned, believing her stepfather, Dr. Grimesby Roylott, murdered Julia Stoner. Sherlock and Watson carefully strategized how to solve the mystery.
As Helen Stoner was telling her life story, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson asked specific questions. According to Helen, while in India Dr. Grimesby Roylott married her mother. Unfortunately, Roylott’s spouse was killed in a railway accident leaving behind £750 for her two daughters and husband to split. Roylott and his unusual

Watson stayed at the hotel across the street from Helen Stoner’s home. At 11 at night Helen sent a signal by turning on a lamp in Julia’s room. This was directed towards the detectives, telling them it was clear to go to Helen’s house. Sherlock and Watson climbed through the window that Helen left open. They sat in Julia’s room, silent, until 3 in the morning; this is when the detectives heard the same whistle Helen and Julia Stoner heard. Watson told Sherlock he noticed slight movement; Holmes hit it with a cane. He fought the unidentified force until the investigator heard, what sounded like Dr. Grimesby Roylott, a scream. Sherlock and Watson instantly raced to his room and found him deceased. A yellow and brown spotted swamp adder was wrapped around his head. The observers discovered the cause of Julia Stoner’s death. Helen was content; she did not feel threatened and was able to exchange vows with her husband. Sir Conan Arthur Doyle wrote in an uplifting tone during the end of the story. While reading the rising action/resolution the viewers felt happy for the characters it would

“The Adventure of the Speckled Band by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a mystery story, was more interesting than its movie version because it has more details of the characters and places, that give you a better understanding of the story. In the book there are more details about the places that the characters go, so that helps you to get a better picture of what is going on. For example in the book It describes Stoke Moran as a decrepit ,old ,rundown estate, but in the movie the mansion is in pretty good condition the grounds are beautiful. Whereas in comparison the grounds in the book are dying and brown, so clearly the book has more detail about the places then the movie simply because it's longer and you can really picture what it looks like…

Sherlock was not guilty due to the fact he did not know that Dr. Roylott would be bit by a snake; swamp adder. In the story, “The Adventures of the Speckled Band,” Dr. Roylott was murdered by his snake the he had trained over a period of time. Audience may believe that Sherlock was guilty and many think that he was not. In Sherlock’s offense, he did not mean to kill Dr. Roylott; meaning that the murder of Dr. Roylott was not premeditated. Also, Sherlock was self-defending himself. Sherlock did not want to die and he also had to protect the lives of two other people because it was his job. Helen had to hire Sherlock to protect her from her peculiar husband. Another reason in which that Sherlock should not be guilty is Sherlock did not know that Dr. Roylott was sitting in the chair next to the ventilator. Sherlock was certain that Dr. Roylott killed Julia and wanted to murder Helen due to money concerns.…

Roylott had obviously pre-planned to killing of Julia as well as Helen. Dr. Roylott had first clamped the bed the bed upon the floor. He did this due to the fact that the girls would possibly want to move the bed. To prevent them from moving the bed, he clamped it to the floor. He clamped the bed where he did due to the fact that he wanted the ventilator to above the bed. Once the ventilator was above the bed, he attached a bell rope to it. Did this to let the snake slither down the bell rope, then onto their bed. To achieve his devious plan, he had to thoroughly train the snake to slither out of the ventilator, down the bell rope, onto the bed, then back up the bell rope and into Dr. Roylott’s room. Dr. Roylott had even understood how to receive the snake, as previously mentioned. He planned this all out with the Speckled Band snake from India, which he could receive. This information proves the fact that Sherlock Holmes caught Dr. Roylott in the middle of his plan; therefore, Sherlock is indecent as well as protecting himself.…

As Helen Stoner sits before him for her consultation he is observing everything and proves this by asking her if she took the train that morning. As she is shocked by his accurate theory Sherlock Holmes responds with, “I observe the second half of a return ticket in the palm of your left glove,” giving his client a glimpse of his observation process (Doyle, The Adventure of the Speckled Band 1). She goes on to explain her own theory of how she believes her sister has died of pure fear. However, Holmes is not quite satisfied with these results because she forgets to speak about her stepfather, “’he is a hard man,’ she said, ‘and perhaps he hardly knows his own strength,” as he notices her wrist displays an imprint of a hand (Doyle, The Adventure of the Speckled Band 5). In “The Blanched Soldier,” Sherlock demonstrates the same observation method as Mr. James Dodd sits before him for the interview. He begins to take some guesses about where Dodd is from by saying, “from South Africa, sir, I perceive,” “Imperial Yeomanry, I fancy,” “Middlesex Corps, no doubt,” all were accurate, giving James the same shock as Helen Stoner (Doyle, The Blanched Soldier 1). James did most of the investigation himself before meeting with Sherlock, while he trusted his every word he listened carefully…

Grimesby Roylott was well-known for having a reputation of being violent. First off, while Dr. Roylott was establishing his practice in Calcutta, he beat his butler to death since he was thoroughly convinced he had been stealing from him. Since he was considered an aristocrat and an important man in the medical field, he nearly absconded the capital punishment. Secondly, when he was back at Stoke Moran, his personal manor, he would physically abuse his step-daughters, Helen and Julia. He would grab them and leave large bruises on their skins that were clearly visible. Specifically, when Helen consulted with Sherlock Holmes, he profiled her and noticed the contusions upon her wrist. Such marks were explained as, “Five little livid spots, the marks of four fingers and a thumb…” (116). Lastly, Roylott hurled a blacksmith over a parapet and into the stream down below. Helen had to pay all the money she could gather in order to deter another public exposure of Dr. Roylott. Ultimately, Grimesby Roylott had a record of murder, abuse, and brutal time periods of…
