Good morning respected members of the jury, teachers and my dear friends today I stand before you to speak on the topic NATURAL DISASTERS: MAN-MADE OR HAND OF GOD. As we all know a disaster is a man-made or natural event which results in widespread loss of human beings, livelihood, property causing human suffering and loss in a definite area. There are various types of disasters and the general characteristic features are their unpredictability, unfamiliarity, speed, uncertainty, threat etc. Most of the disasters strike quickly. It changes the lives of all it touches and its effect is felt even after the event. Its forces are largely outside the control of the people whom it effect. Some of the natural disasters include earthquakes which occur in seconds, cyclones and landslides in minutes, flash floods and tsunamis in hours, and volcanoes in weeks. Some of these disasters can be predicted well in advance, these include cyclones, tsunamis, volcanoes etc. Some cannot be predicted like earthquakes, flashfloods, and landslides. The flashflood followed by landslides that occurred in Uttarakhand could not be predicted. The general causative features of disasters include poverty. It explains why people in urban areas are forced to live on hills that are prone to landslide or why people settle near volcanoes or rivers that are invariably flood their banks. Other causative features are population explosion, rapid urbanization, environmental degradation and lack of awareness and information. There are 31 types of disasters. But mainly disasters fall into two major categories – manmade and hand of god.

It is necessary to first understand what is meant by the term ‘human made disaster’, a credible answer may hypothesis that these events are actually better defined as anthropogenic hazards that through errors, misjudgments, failures or negligence of one or more parties have lead to disasters. These anthropogenic hazards show a threat from both human intent, neglect and error that involves the collapse of an anthropogenic system. Anthropogenic disasters are human made, ‘anthropogenic’ in nature (caused by man), as opposed to natural disasters which result from natural hazards. Carter, defines human made disaster as, ‘A sudden or progressive event caused by a human, which impacts with such severity on a community that the emergency services or, in their absence, the affected community have to respond by taking exceptional measures’.[1] Examples might include; Sociological Hazards (Crime, Arson, Civil…

A hazard can be defined as, “A potentially damaging physical event, phenomenon or human activity that may cause the loss of life or injury, property damage, social and economic disruption or environmental degradation”. Hazards can include latent conditions that may represent future threats and can have different origins: natural (geological, hydrometeorological and biological); or induced by human processes (environmental degradation and technological hazards). Hazards can be single, sequential or combined in their origin and effects. Each hazard is characterized by its location, intensity, frequency and probability. International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (2004, 16). A natural disaster is the effect of a natural hazard (e.g., flood, tornado, hurricane, volcanic eruption, earthquake, heatwave, or landslide). It leads to financial, environmental or human losses. The resulting loss depends on the vulnerability of the affected population to resist the hazard, also called their resilience. This understanding is concentrated in the formulation: "disasters occur when hazards meet vulnerability." A natural hazard will hence never result in a natural disaster in areas without vulnerability, e.g. strong earthquakes in uninhabited areas. The term natural has consequently been disputed because the events simply are not hazards or disasters without human involvement. A concrete example of the division between a natural hazard and a natural disaster is that the 1906 San Francisco earthquake was a disaster, whereas earthquakes are a hazard. This article gives an introduction to notable natural disasters, refer to the list of natural disasters for a comprehensive listing.…
