Beauty contests are bad for body image
• Beauty competitions, or as some people call them, beauty pageants, degrade women and present a bad body image. If the beauty competition was based on skill or ability, that would be fine however people judge them for their appearance.

• For example, if five people were running in a race, only one will win, there is no doubt as to who ran the fastest. There is also no need for anyone to subjectively judge such competitions.

• Exploitation of women
1. Beauty pageants are degrading and harmful to women . They turn women into objects to be used and played with.
Even more alarming, beauty pageants are starting to cater to younger and younger contestants. Many women start beauty pageants at a very young age. Their parents become very competitive, obsessed in some cases and force the children to take drastic adjustments to their bodies like having fake tans, hair extensions, permanent mascara, waxed eyebrows and legs, whitened teeth and even dressed in a provocative manner. Do these young children really need to be in beauty pageants to know that they are pretty? Do we need children to think that their looks are judged and if they don't win they are not pretty? No we don't!
• Skinny Body Image
2. Is beauty not an enduring thing? Or does it only last a year or just a pageant? Beauty contests are well promoted by the media, by television, which influence young women's opinions on appearance.
3. The participants of these contests are poor role models for girls as they set impractical body image. They promote an unattainable image which often leads to women trying to obtain it and leading to issues. This is another way of saying you have to be perfect in order to compete in these competitions.

• Health
4. Beauty contests are harmful. It teaches children the value of a person is based on appearance. They increase dieting, eating disorders come about, and lowers their self esteem causing them to feel simply inadequate and ugly

5. Eventually they turn out to be so thin from the lack of food and start to see every bone in their body. Hair starts to fall out, teeth weaken even break. Your immune system weakens and sometimes can even lead to death.

• Lowers Self Esteem
1. Beauty pageants also affect the self-esteem of some women who feel that a size ten isn’t good enough for the competitions. In every pageant or competition the majority of the contestants are at a size zero to five. This brings the regular woman's self-esteem down because they feel that the world revolves around skinny models.
2. How can women have a healthy appreciation of their body when the only time they are judged is on their looks and from hours of preparation and putting on tons of beauty products.

3. Pageants judge only on what they see on first glance, and people are so much more than that.

4. they say beauty is skin deep, well it isn't, a person can have a beautiful inside as well as the outside.

The girls can compete and have some fun and later in life earn money or scholarships to further their actual careers in the future. The extremes though those mothers will take to get their little girls to win can be way too extreme. Toddlers and Tiaras have publicly shown that not only can these competitions be stressful but in some ways abusive and terrible acts of behavior. Multiple little girls on this Television show display no respect to mothers and one little girl was caught on film slapping her mother. Another mother had her daughter “smoke” a fake cigarette on stage to go with her outfit. Not only did these girls show disrespectful behavior but showed other little children that it is okay to act this way. Another instance is what some consider being abuse to the children competing in the pageants. One daughter was held down so her eyebrows could be waxed. The mother stood by telling the camera crew that she was only scared to get her eyebrows waxed because one time the wax was too hot and pealed her skin off. The daughter kept saying she didn’t want to get her eyebrows waxed but the mother forced her to. Clearly this was an instance of abuse, not a normal one but still you could tell the child was in pain. One very famous little pageant girl as most people know her Honey Boo Boo.…

Beauty pageants made their first appearances in America during the 1920’s, where women flaunted around casinos, determined to win a crown for their physical attractiveness. The owner of the casino where these activities occurred, figured that this would attract more tourists. Throughout the years, more modern pageants were formed, like Ms. USA and Ms. America. Following in the footsteps of its adult form, child beauty pageants merged into the 1960’s. Child beauty pageants usually consist of modeling sportswear, evening wear, and showing off any special talent they may have. Judges critique the girls individually, based on their physical looks, poise, confidence, and perfection. To the judges, this is called “the complete package.” Although the objective of most child pageants is to build confidence and self-worth, beauty pageants can be considered exploitive to minors by causing them to believe in unrealistic ideas about beauty.…

Competition categories may include talent, interview, sportswear, casual wear, swim wear, western wear, theme wear, outfit of choice, decade wear, and evening wear. Depending on the type of pageant system (glitz/natural), contestants…

Scientific research based on future outcomes of child beauty pageants in the novel “Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry”, Psychologists Sigmund Freud's Psychoanalysis theory says ‘Beauty pageants lead to the desire of being perfect”. Psychologist Phil McGraw told pageant mothers that they need to explain their children that pageants are not realities but fantasies. Possible emotional problems and negative psychological effects are a huge factor and are going to drastically affect the contestants future. Forty percent of children that participated in the beauty pageants have problems psychologically and the other sixty percent of children are unhappy during the pageant itself. Women who have competed in beauty pageants in the past were more unhappy with their bodies unlike women who had not participated. A person's development is determined by the events that have occurred in their early childhood. Because of the strong desire to be perfect some resort to extremes to gain that approval. Perfectionism for example, spray tanning, hair extensions, and sometimes starving…
