Who are my neighbors? Here is a story from the Book of Luke10:25-37. On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" "What is written in the Law?" he replied. "How do you read it?" He answered: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with your entire mind'; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" "You have answered correctly," Jesus replied. "Do this and you will live?" But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?" In reply Jesus said: "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. 'Look after him,' he said, 'and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.' "Which of these three do you

Here Jesus tells a metaphor to the listener and then left him disappointed. It is Luke 10:25-37. From the prior scriptures, we know that there was a lawyer who asked Jesus a question: What must I do to inherit eternal life? Thus Jesus and those

In the passage Luke 10:25-37, Luke tells of the greatest commandment and the Good Samaritan. In this reading Jesus answers the questions asked of him by the lawyer, within his answer, he tells one of his most remembered parables, the parable of the Good Samaritan. What were the questions asked by the lawyer? Why did he ask them of Jesus? What was Jesus’s response to the lawyer? What prompted Jesus to tell the parable of the Good Samaritan? These questions are just a few that enter one’s mind when they read the words of Luke. The lessons in this reading are twofold; they were applied to situations during Jesus’ lifetime as well as they are still applicable in today’s society.…

In Mark 10, two of Jesus’ disciples ask Jesus if they can be seated at His left and right hand in heaven. These two disciples, James and John, saw leadership and following Jesus as an opportunity to gain a higher status but Jesus makes a statement to his 12 disciples about how “the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45) He was hoping to establish and set a tone for his disciples which he follows through with during the last supper. After they broke bread, Jesus began to wash his disciple’s feet. He says to them, “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have…

In the “The Parable of the Good Samaritan” the man who was robbed and left for dead was shown no compassion by the people passing by, even by a priest. They show no interest to the man and looked the other way. That is until the Samaritan passed by and showed him compassion, and only then did then did the robbed man’s suffering stop. “[…] bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him“(34). This displays that only compassion can stop people from hurting. If no one had shown this man compassion as the Samaritan did, surely he would have…

His understanding of the ‘’mission’’ in Christianity differs to a greater extend with the understanding of Paul and Mathew. While Mathew sees the mission in universal perspective, Luke sees it as a duty to the disciples and the followers of Jesus Christ. For this reason, his work is a direct replacement of Mathew’s ‘’great commission.’’ Another major contradiction between Luke and Mathew is that the former did not only write the gospel of Jesus, but also wrote the Acts of the Apostles and that the latter is Jewish-Christian, hence bringing the difference in interpretation of the mission in Christianity between the two authors. However, it is equally important to appreciate the fact that the authors show some similarities in their writings and that they wrote their books in the same period despite the differences seen in the messages and the texts. Luke like Paul came to rescue people from the confusion they had about their identity. His writing seeks to give direction to the Christians who had lost direction and were wondering if Christianity was an upcoming religion or if it was a continuation of the church left by Jesus Christ. In his writing, Luke emphasizes three things, the Holy Spirit, forgiveness, and forgiveness[iv]. He also makes the poor the center and the predominant heading of his book. Through this he mentions, association that Jesus…

For you tithe mint, dill, and cummin and have neglected the weightier matters of the law :justice and mercy and faith. It is these you ought to have practice without neglecting the others". (Matthew 23, 23-28). This is yet another reason for viewing Jesus' teachings as independent of religion. Jesus preached moral in a time where the depraved moral state of the Roman Empire was on its way down, leading people into systems of idol worship and living highly immoral lives. Whether people accepted his teachings or no, he represented higher morality than what was prevalent in the roman…

They both snubbed their noses at each other and thought only their religion was the true religion. The Jewish religious leaders viewed Samaritans as “unclean.” This meant that if Jews came in contact with a Samaritan, they could not enter the Temple until a given time had passed and they had performed a ritual bath to be clean again. So, Jesus’ illustration of a Samaritan helping a Jewish traveler was a radically different idea of neighborly love.…
