I think most of us will agree that security is spelled S-E-C-U-R-I-T-Y, right?
So, if you were filling out a Federal I-9 form for a new employee and they handed you a Social Security Card that looked like this one with security spelled SEgURITY you would most likely know you were dealing with a forgery, however, not all forgeries are this easy to spot, so today I’m going to tell you about a FREE government program available to employers that in a manner of seconds will verify that your newly hired employee is eligible to work inside the United States.
You may be asking yourself why this matters. Well, regardless of how we fill about the undocumented workers in this country, the law on employing them is quite …show more content…
The way it works is every time you hire a new employee you take the information they supplied in section one of their I-9 along with the ID’s you accepted to complete section 2 of the I-9 and you log onto the E-Verify website and electronically compare the information you have against the 425 million records in the SSA database and the 60 millions records in the DHS immigration databases. You get results in seconds. You will either be told you have a confirmations or a Tentative Non-Confirmations. In you receive a Tentative Non-confirmation you simply print off the Non-Confirm paperwork, hand it to your employee and ask them to check a box stating whether or not they want to contest the non-confirm, if the do not you will terminate them at that time, If they do contest you have them sign the form, make a copy of it for them and explain to them they have 8 days to take the paperwork to the local social security office, have it stamped and bring it back to you. Within 24 hours of their taking the papers to the SSA office the E-Verify system will be updated with either a Confirmation or Non – confirmation status. If they do not bring the paperwork back they are automatically terminated. In the 18 months Staffmark has been using this system I have only had a handful of people contest the decision and each of those who did contest it was in this country legally and eligible to work, but due to a clerical error the system came back with a Tentative Non-confirm which they were all happy to get cleared
