Speech: Teacher and South East High
ALBERTO BALVANEDA BLOCK # 3

GRADUATION SPEECH

South east has thought me a lot of things but I am very thankful that it gave me three great qualities that I still carry on today that are Respect, leadership, and professionalism. It has been long since I first lay my eyes on this school. I was 14 years old when I arrived in this country. I dint know what road to take, my thoughts were hey vacations since I originally lived and went to school in Guadalajara, Mexico. I decided that the best choice for me to take was to stay and achieve an education in the United States. I did not think twice after my uncles showed me South East High. I was like yea this is the place that I want to come to. I loved the way it looked, the way the people treated each other, and how friendly staff was. Once I started I found out that South East wasn't only a school it was something of another world. I had very good memories from all my teachers that I had had through all my four years on school. One of my biggest memories is the time when I first come at school, it was the first week of school and I want it to go back at home with my parents, brother, and sister because I really miss them but they told me that I have to be strong and achieve all my goals and here I am graduating me and starting a new beginning. One of the motivations that inspire me was the words that Martin Luther King said "I have a dream" so do I and it’s to become the greatest architect. My parents always told me that I can become whatever I want if I keep trying and doing the best that I can and never give up.

Trough all this years on school I had learned so many good things here on South East High that my friends, teachers, counselors, and also others had teach me. They teach me to be who I am and not try to be who I am not. One of my teachers that I am really thankful is my ESL teacher that teaches me in the best way that he could. He teaches me how to write and speak this language. I want to say at all of you that I know and also at those who I don’t know that you have to do what you’re heart tells you and try to achieve all your goals not to do what other people wants you to do. I want to thank at all my teachers and family for all the help that they gave me. Thank you everybody for listed to me and Go Class of 2010 we did it.

When I first arrived at high school, I was extremely nervous. The school was huge and there was not a familiar face in site. Although I was nervous, staff and students did their best to create a positive learning environment. Going into my sophomore year, I received the same positive energy from the staff and my peers. My guidance counselor, Ms. Hunter, helped me to prepare and offered me the opportunity to enroll in…

The high school has given me all types of opportunities from discipline to study options and also preparing me for college and the real world. I’s truly grateful for all the supports given to get this far because high school helped changed and mold me to become the young lady that I is today. It helped further my education and I continue to pray to the lord above that I can stay on track because only God knows where I’m headed with this education; but for sure it’s for a better me. Hopefully my years at Concordia will be the years of…

From the minute I saw it, I knew that it was where I belonged, and I would do whatever necessary to make sure that I found myself there when it was time. It was so beautiful, so heavenly, so desirable. I knew that it would be the perfect place for me. I felt as though I would finally be able to “fit in.” I had never even met anyone from this place, but I could tell by the brochure – the one with all the photos of dance performances, musicals, and Cirque du Soleil acts – that I would be happy there, at the college-preparatory boarding and day school called Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School. I told my mom…

In grade 6 I went to a great school called David Leeder Middle School. Even though none of my friends from grade 5 were in my class, I had an amazing year. All of my teachers were fabulous except for one. My math and science teacher was the worst teacher I had ever had. I remember that she would always yell at us for asking her questions about our work. In grade 7, I was also in David Leeder, but this was the best year I had ever had in my life. Every single teacher of mine were very good and they taught everything very thoroughly. Also, I made a lot of friends during this year. Academically I had the best year and I took part in extra curriculars such as soccer and volleyball. During these two years I went to Pakistan, I went to New York…

I went to Ansbach Middle-High School. The school was shaped like a rectangle, also all the housing around us were just really tall rectangles, and the military base itself was just a rectangle. Looking back, the environment around me was very depressing and boring. There was a max of 300 hundred students at my school and that was spread through grades 7th-12th. There was no majority ethnicity in the school, instead there was a multitude of races that attended every year. I attended the school through 7th-11th grade. Even though I went to school for 5 years I didn't have an impact until my last year there. 11th grade was the turning point for me. I got involved with a program at my school called the Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC). I joined this program at 9th grade and treated it as another class till my junior…

Throughout my life, I have moved three times, lived in two different states, and been to five different schools. From these experiences, I have had the opportunity to meet a variety of different people, for this I am very grateful. I consider my first memories to have started when my family and I moved to Overland Park Kansas. The excitement of living in a new neighborhood, and house, was almost unbearable for my younger self. Once we moved in, I had a chance to explore the new surroundings and meet some of my best childhood friends. I also enjoyed six wonderful years in Elementary school. However, once middle school started, I observed the adoption of a more competitive atmosphere and the abandonment of standard teaching methods. This shift…

Through these distractions and kind words, I was destined to stay focused on what mattered the most, my education and future. I took every opportunity available to me and through the guidance of teachers, I was able to perceiver and beat the odds of being another failure from Moreno Valley High School. I still wasn’t able to learn the culture and fit in, and this initial challenge became even harder during high school as the community became bigger and I was still treated as an alien. My father wasn’t able to help me much since he didn’t know about how life worked here either and didn’t have the time and focus to fully keep an eye on how I did in school. Even though he showed me how to succeed in school, it was still significantly different than in Egypt and that is why my challenges increased. I had to embark on this journey of new experiences all alone since I’m the first to go through all these adjustments. It was all up to me to learn from the experiences I went through in high school and my teenage life in America. With all the changes happening in my life as a teenager and as a foreigner in a different country, I didn’t have the motivation to pull the best grades or to be a top student during my high school career. High school was a learning curve for me. Even though I didn’t do well and didn’t go onto a reputable four-year institution, I matured and learned to be successful during high school by failing my standards and learning how serious and demanding it is to lose my chance of becoming successful. Even though differences in the American culture and the system posed plenty of challenges for me, I was very thankful that it was different from my home…

I never imagine that I will take any academic award in high school or any time for all that matter. When I stepped excitedly and nervously into the stage to get my third academic letter award in high school, it was the most amazing moments in my life; and without a doubt, it was a fantastic fantasy in between my hands. Arriving at my new school excitingly, Marshall High School, I met my new counselor, who was the first person I met in school. She told me about the school system, the teachers, clubs/organization and my own classes; all that was eagerness and thrilling. We walked around the school; I started imagine who I will be and who I will be friends: one of the popular students, the normal students, or the losers.…

Back when I was in fourth year high school, I never thought that I would be able to pass the entrance exams here in UST. I have read and heard many comments that it is very hard but luckily and thank God, I was able to study here. Within my years of studying here, I have experienced a lot of fun things, made a bunch of friends and created a number of happy memories. I remember on my first day here as a Thomasian freshie, I almost got lost because our building is very big and has many rooms. Now, when I think about it, I just at my laugh at myself. At first, it was hard to adapt to the environment of the school but little by little, I was able to. There, I met new classmates and friends, most of them are cool, smart and rich. One of the most memorable thing during our freshman year was our Welcome Walk where we crossed the arch of the century, something that every Thomasian must be able to do.…

My education is one of the most important things in my life. I think that is the base of the life to successful and to be someone important in the future. I was starting my education in Mexico. I’m going to kinder garden in “Heroes del Chapultepec.” I loved going out to lunch and run with my little friends, I was very athletic; this is what I liked about my kinder garden. Sincerely overall there’s nothing that I don’t liked it from kinder garden. After kinder garden I continued at Mexico too in primary was a 6 years there at “Miguel F. Martinez.” For me was one of the best time because is the time of our lives where we learned many things of the life, the best. I didn’t like because there were “reports” and they called your parents to tell them about your citizenship, three reports and we get out the school. Secondary was more difficult for me, but I met good friends there and I think they are not my bests friends but I know that they will be there for me. My secondary was a private school, “Instituto Mexico” and was intesting because is about Catholics. Every morning we prayed, and always when a class was to begin, we must pray. That was a three years of a good experience in my life. I liked when we go to spirituals retreats. The whole day we were prayed. We had a sentence that said: “Todo a Jesus por Maria, Todo a Maria para Jesus” was like the principal sentence of the institute. And the finished with secondary I come here to San Diego to study high school in “Southwest High School” I started in 10th grade and for me was super different, the classes, classrooms, teachers, students, school everything. For me was a new experience in my life everybody in their tree. Coming lunch and everybody knows where will be they friends, that’s was very funny. I loved the assembly’s, when we scrammed to win senior vs. juniors and everybody with everybody but the happiest moment was my graduation, class of 2011.…
