What is schizophrenia? Schizophrenia is a chronic disease that affects approximately 1% of the population worldwide. The word "schizophrenia has a Greek origin that loosely translates its meaning to "splitting of the mind.As well, 1 in a hundred people in Canada are afflicted at one point in their life with schizophrenia. Cases of schizophrenia worldwide have also increased by 5 percent in the last forty years.
The primary reason I chose schizophrenia is because of the movie a Beautiful Mind. In the movie the protagonist was a world renowned math professor that unknowingly suffered with schizophrenia. The movie portrayed the struggles and emotional impact that schizophrenia had on his life. This movie helped me to understand the impact schizophrenia had on people’s lives and I was enticed to learn more about it. As well, I wanted to know the reason behind the increasingly high statistics in schizophrenia worldwide.
There is much importance of Schizophrenia for a family studies course in Canada society. Firstly, Schizophrenia is on the rise in Canada, thus it is having a greater impact on families in Canadian society. As well, schizophrenia is mental disorder and it is not as easily cured as physical diseases. Therefore, the disease typically has a greater impact on the person of a Canadian society. As well, part of the curriculum of the course is the study of health and diet important for Canadian society. Mental Health is also a large factor that contributes to overall health. Secondly, the topic is important for our family studies class because it brings awareness of how common schizophrenia is on people in Canada. As well, it teaches us students on how to be informed citizens and to be more empathic and sympathize more for people with schizophrenia.
Concluding the research question that raises many concerns is how does schizophrenia impact the life of people afflicted with it in Canada?
