Throughout the novel one of the major themes in time which also allows us as a reader to understand in more detail the time travel of one character from child to adult frequent. As one of the main themes is time Frayn tries to create a war time period- to do this he zeitgeists using things such as smell and sound. Frayn also uses first person narrative to transport us back to the present, this helps to separate the young Stephen from the older one which brings us further to explore the nostalgic tone when he talks about his past again.
