In the hook exercise it shows a picture of two people holding hands. I think this shows that they knew others were going through the same thing because the people they were with could've helped them get through this hard time. Because they would have understood what they were going through and helped each other. This supports my claim because it shows that they got hope and comfort knowing that others were going through the same thing as them and they had other people to talk to and relate top and help.
Another way the spirit triumphs is them still having the hope they were going to make it out alive. In the background essay it says "still, Etty remained remarkably positive during the many months she spent in the Nazi transit camp." This shows that she hoped she would make it out alive but she knew even if she didn't she didn't want to live her last moments in fear or sadness she wanted to be happy. So the hope of her making it out alive gave her happiness. It also might have made others around her happy because when people are happy they give out positive
