In commemoration of the Spiritan’s founder week, a musical concert was staged in Duquesne University’s at Mary Pappert School of music in the PNC Recital Hall on Wednesday, February 3, 2016. A tour was made to Brazil, Ghana, Benin, India, China, and finally to Caribbean.
Brazilian concert was called, Samba and Samba reggae selections played by Timbeleza. The Brazilian displayed their beautiful culture with percussion. Their attire was uniform, attractive and throughout the show, the movement and rhythm of the music, was well harmonized. They demonstrated their expertise in the way they played the instruments and the movement of their bodies which stimulated me to move my body as well.
The second concert was Benin and Ghana led by Dr. Joseph Sheehan. He had studied in Ghana and so organized this beautiful Ghanaian show. I found the piece awesome because, Dr. Sheehan is coming from are different culture. The music was spiced with western instruments, such as; Viola, cello, piano bass, violin but the drums was the only common African instrument. The melody was fascinating, rhythmically exciting with moderate tempo. The vocalist sang with confidence and sometimes with a magnificent pitch. The content was pretty noble and graceful. Conversely the Ghanaian calm melody counteracted the noisy effect of Brazilian music. The Ghanaians have a rich culture and a beautiful traditional attire, It would have been more Ghanaian or African if the vocalist and Dr. Sheehan worn a Ghanaian attire or something African to make a difference. I saw it as a westernized African concert. The Brazilian group demonstrated a sign of hospitality by inviting interested people to join them for practice which I think is a signs of openness and the wiliness to share their rich culture.
