Contra Indications to massage are very important and are the first and most important thing you should consider before treating a patient. Looking at the Contra Indications during assessment of the patients needs is a good time to see whether or not treatment would make things worse. It is important to understand your own limitations and refer when necessary to a specialist.
The following are the Important Contra-Indications of Sports Massage.
1) Do not give treatment within the first 48 Hours after the injury has occurred.
2) Do not give Massage over undiagnosed Painful areas or areas of inflammation, Swelling or bruising.
3) Massage is not to be done over areas of Septic Focci (Areas that could be Contagious) or When infectious skin conditions are present.
4) Massage is not to be done over the abdomen during pregnancy or menstruation
5) When Cardio Vascular conditions are present such as Thrombosis, phlebitis, angina, hypertension or varicose veins Massage is not to be administered.
6) Massage is not to be done over lumps and bumps or Scar Tissue.
7) Massage is not to be performed for any medical condition that is currently being treated by a medical practitioner without their permission.
8) Do not give treatment for any condition you don’t recognize.

All of the following should be used as guidelines for referring a patient to a specialist.
1) Any injury that has not Traumatic or Overuse Cause as this may mean that something could be seriously damaged or broken and would need further specialist attention.
2) Any injury that is not improving or is still badly inflamed as this may give an inclination that there is a more serious underlying injury that needs careful attention.
