After securing a slot for next year’s FIBA World Cup in Spain, Gilas Pilipinas fell after facing the giant Iranians last August 11 at the Mall of Asia Arena. The Iranians hammered Gilas Pilipinas and secured an 85-71 win to grab their 2013 FIBA Asia Championship gold medal for the third time.
Without the injured Marcus Douthit, the Filipinos had trouble in containing the seven-foot-two Hamed Hadadi, Iran’s NBA veteran player that caused the problem for the Gilas’ offense and defense.
Aside from the silver medal, Jayson Castro received a watch after naming him as one of the tournament’s most valuable player along with Korea’s Kim Mingoo, Chinese Taipei’s Lin Chih Chieh and Iran’s Oshin Sahakian and as-expected- Hamed Hadadi.
Despite of their lose, Gilas Pilipinas is very thankful for the heart warming support of the Filipinos.
Along with Korea, the Philippines and Iran will represent Asia in the 2014 FIBA World Cup, to be held in Spain.
