The purpose of this study was to determine the knowledge and opinions on concussions of high school coaches from a geographi- cally large yet rural state in the northern Rocky Mountains of the United States. Few medical issues in sport are more important, or have had as much publicity recently, as concussions. The exposure gleaned from tragic health issues among professional athletes post- concussion has motivated college and professional sport agencies to modify and enact strict guidelines in the diagnosis and treatment of suspected concussions. Yet underdiagnosis and mistreatment by some (former University of Michigan coach in 2014) highlight the need for continued education and enforcement of the current guide- lines. Obviously, when a head…
In any sprinting event, there is a definite need to have a fresh start. Safety in sports is a vital issue not only in football, but also in every sport. Concussions are amongst the numerous neurological injuries which might occur during football. SRC (sport-related concussions) can arise alone or in an amalgamate mix with brachial plexus or cervical spine injuries. In the US, estimates of 300,000 sport-related concussions are reported annually. Research has shown that football is the most frequently affected sport with 47% of players injured. It has been determined that retired players greatly suffer from Alzheimer syndrome than any other group. This essay attempts to determine the safest start position among the 3 different sprint start positions, namely a 4-point position, a 3-point position, and a 2-point position, via comparing their relevant biomechanical…

Highschool sports, specifically football, are dangerous, and more so than they appear. Have you ever thought about what it feels like to be thrown to the ground and then see nothing? Hear loud high pitched ringing in your ears. Have an enormous headache. Well, it is called a concussion and many children get them every day in a game called football. But, that's not the only dangerous sport. Soccer, lacrosse, hockey, baseball cause concussions, broken bones even death! Even though some might argue that sports teach lessons and keep kids healthy. Also, being healthy can be achieved by going to the park, playing with friends having fun, not risking death just to be fit.…
Concussions, not a great experience for anyone, but could everyone be more protected from concussions if hockey helmets were made safer? Scientists are working hard to test top-brand hockey helmets, such as Bauer and CCM, to see how much power it takes to cause a concussion on each helmet and if scientists figure this out, hockey helmets could be made to almost prevent concussions. If hockey helmets were made safer, concussions would be less common, which would cause more hockey players to continue playing hockey. Hockey helmets being made safer have definite advantages for youth hockey players, as well as pro hockey players.…
Football is a great game to play, it is the ultimate in team sports, however there are some dangers to the sport that I have loved for over 30 years. I have friends some who have played right here at Temple U and have made it to the NFL and others had great collage careers. That’s why I found the article Simple Blood Tests for Rapid Concussion Diagnosis in the Scientific American an interesting read. Professional Football Players have been thrust into the spotlight because of concussions and the effects they have. Most notably in May of 2012 Junior Seau of the San Diego Chargers committing suicide due to the effects of head trauma or concussions.…

Concussions occur in every sport and lately have become a controversial topic within the field of sports. Concussion symptoms are usually noticeable but some symptoms are more subtle. If a player decides to continue playing with a concussion or has a concussion history the consequences can be detrimental to their health and overall well-being for the rest of their lives. Because of the increase of concussions due to sport activity many states including New York have passed laws containing the following three aspects. Athletes must be removed from play if they are suspected of having suffered a concussion; athletes are required to obtain written medical authorization before returning to physical activity; and some form of concussion education is required, typically for coaches, parents and athletes.…

I play with a broken foot, broken wrist, concussion. I didn't want to lose my spot to another player.”(2) “Many players will just ‘shake it off’ or play through the dizziness and nausea.”(2) If players continue to play through the symptoms they can develop Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy also known as CTE. CTE is a degenerative disease found in the brains of many athletes. “Recently the department of Veterans Affairs and Boston University researchers studied the brains of 165 people who play football in high school, college or pro level. The teams found CTE in 130 of them. Of the brains studied 91 of them belong to former NFL players, 87 of those 91 had signs of…
The Center for Disease Control estimates that 1.6-3.8 million concussions occur annually (qtd in NATA 1). A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury that causes a disturbance in cerebral function (BIAA 1). Rates have tripled over the course of seven years in teens (CDC 1). There are a variety of ways the injury can be prevented. Similarly, if one is thought to have a concussion there are several ways to evaluate and treat it. Not only does injury to the brain affect student-athletes physically, many students are affected mentally as well. Teachers should be aware of the aftermath students experience and curriculum may need to be modified for students due to concussions and the inability to focus and perform as well academically.…
Many people are attaining trauma induced injuries from playing sports. By law, a medical professional must sign off before an injured player can go back to the field. In addition to obtaining a concussion, injured athletes should be required to sit out for longer periods of time to allow the brain to heal completely. While some may claim that concussions take up to a week to heal, approximately 10% of athletes require more than seven days to recover.…
