Many Americans struggled with their beliefs, on whether to remain isolated or protect America through defending democracy elsewhere in the world.…
The end of WWII left the United States and the Soviet Union as the two dominant world powers, and they soon became locked in a “cold war” confrontation. The Cold War spread from Europe to become a global ideological conflict between democracy and communism. Among its effects were a nasty hot war in Korea and a domestic crusade against “disloyalty.”…
The terrorist attacks against America on September 11th, 2001 have dramatically changed the way in which America safeguards herself.…
Americans to this day will never act or feel the same way as they once used to. What we did then and how we did it, we can no longer do now. It has been over twelve years since the United States went through one of the most horrific, terrifying tragedies in all of United States history. As we all know today, on September 11, 2001, Al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four passenger airliners so they could be flown into buildings in suicide attacks. Two of those planes were intentionally crashed into the North and South towers of the World Trade Center complex in New York City. For this reason, there has been an enormous amount of changes in the United States. The three major areas that have changed are the airport security, the government, and the psychological impact.…
From the minute the first airplane hit the World Trade Center on that fateful morning September 11th, 2001 the entire nation was moved. Then when two more planes came crashing into the other tower and the Pentagon, the nation was crushed. It was the most fatal terrorist attack ever committed against the United Stated killing nearly 3,000 people. Thousands of children were left with one parent or even became orphans. September 11th quickly became our biggest national tragedy since the JFK assassination. After the attacks, many changes could be seen in the country beginning with the government. Immediately after the attacks security shot up, which quickly sacrificed some citizen freedom. For example, the USA Patriot Act was passed in 2001 to give law enforcement agencies surveillance powers over U.S citizens. This led to creation of the Information Awareness Office whose goal was to develop technology that could collect and process massive amounts of…
Perhaps, many thought, September 11 would mark the beginning of a time when all Americans would stand together in unity and equality…. politicians passed new laws like the “USA Patriot Act” that greatly expanded police powers to spy, arrest and interrogate suspects (League for Revolutionary Party, 2011).…
When analyzing the ways in which the Cold War manifested itself in the American psyche throughout the post-war period, the need to maintain order at stability at home are central. Beginning after WWII, Americans looked for a “return to normalcy” to cope with the losses of wartime; the results were magnificent—large economic boom following a short recession, massive consumer revolution, and advances in science, health, and technology. Together, this created an overall wave of optimism that provided safety and insulation from the undercurrents of domestic and foreign issues during the era. Early civil rights issues like segregation became known due to the 1954 Brown v. Board decision as well as the Montgomery Bus Boycotts; clandestine, CIA-led…
The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 altered American’s perceptions of their role in the world by no taking terrorism more seriously. Americans are ready to allocate unlimited attention and resources to countering any terrorist threat. People always thought the government was a joke and weren’t into politics but when the 9/11 attack happened they’re willing to cooperate with the government to help protect the nation from future attacks. Since the 9/11 attack airports have been stricter to protect the US from other airplane hijackings.…
The patriot act was passed in response to the attack. The patriot act was signed by George W Bush and it was an act to deter and punish terrorist’s acts in the United States and around the world, to enhance the law enforcement investigatory tools, and for other purposes. This allowed law enforcements to search and watch over U.S. citizens without a warranty. It was a controversial topic for many people. Another thing is “after 9/11 budgets for defines related agencies skyrocketed: Homelands Security’s discretionary budget jumped from about $16 billion in 2002 to more than $43 billion in 2011.” It is said that the unites states has spent more than $7.6 trillion on defines and homeland security since 9/11. Bush was determined to find Osama Bin Laden and sent many troops to Afghanistan which fired up the war. The war on terror was a term used by George w bush that referred to the international military campaign that took place after nine eleven. The war on terror was viewed differently than others. For example, people believed it reduced civil liberties and human rights. But Many U.S. citizens were determined to go overseas and fight for our country after the attack. There was a spread of patriotism throughout the nation. After attacking the Taliban government which fell, bin laden was hiding out away from us. Eventually, seal team six captured him in 2011 and he was…
The events that took place on September 11th 2001 showed America that we need to expect the unexpected and prepare for the future. On this day, 19 terrorists from a group called al-Qaeda hijacked 4 commercial passenger planes. Two of them were crashed into the Twin Towers of New York City’s World Trade Center. The third plane was crashed into The Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane they say was intended to be crashed into the White House itself, but the plane landed in Pennsylvania instead. Following 9/11, the U.S. government took many steps to try to make the country safer, such as heightened airport security, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Patriot Act.…
The major similarity is that the panic and threat from some nation outside of the United States is still a clear and present danger. Over 50 years later, the United States is still experiencing the same issues and going to war over them. Our former President said there were weapons of mass destruction overseas, and we needed to disarm that nation. Very quickly we rose up in support of that war only to turn against it when the lies materialized. But with the bombing of the towers and airplane, America was in a panic.…
propaganda, espionage, Proxy wars, arms race fallout shelters the Cuban missile crisis or even the bay of pigs affected the world as we know it today.…
The American Civil Defense program during the cold war reinforced American cultural ideals of individualism and self-sufficiency. During the cold war there was fear of the other countries use of nuclear weapons against the United States. Since this fear was gradually increasing throughout the U.S. president Truman established the American Civil Defense program to help protect citizens if there was a nuclear attack on American soil. Because of the increased fear of a nuclear attack the government came up with an idea of fallout shelters. These shelters were said to have the ability to protect American citizens from nuclear radiation and withstand a nuclear blast.…
One of the events prior to 9/11 that I believe also significantly contributed to shaping homeland security in the present was the Cold War. The differences between the Cold War and the War on Terror were of course the time, the place, and the people who were involved but the main difference were the cause of each war. The U.S. got involved with Korea and Vietnam because the US wanted to stop the spread of communism coming from countries like the U.S.S.R. The US declared war against Afghanistan because of terrorist actions of 9/11 to stop the spread of terrorism in the future. Reasons like these are what shaped the homeland security program, Americans fear that there are people out there who will directly and/or indirectly harm this country.…
In your opinion, how was the government’s response to the 1919 and 1920 attacks different to its response to the attacks of September 11,…
