Thorpe Park is a theme park located in England, surrey which was built in 1979, with an aim of being a water themed park. At first the site was a gravel pit owned by Ready Mixed Concrete Limited who excavated gravel, but then in the 1970’s the company flooded part of the site with the intention of creating water based theme park; the other side of the park would have been used for an educational park with the theme of the history of British people. In 1998 the Tussauds group bought the park and made it into a ‘thrill seekers’ amusement park with rides such as The Flying Fish, Depth Charge and No Way Out. Then in 2008 Tussauds group was bought by Merlin Entertainments group which is the second largest visitor’s attraction operator in the world and the largest visitor’s attraction in Europe for £1 billion which meant they now owned Thorpe Park. Merlin Entertainments own Alton Towers, Chessington World of Adventures, Warwick Castle, Heide Park Resort and Gardaland Resort.…

    Town of Manchester

In the article “Kentucky Town of Manchester Illustrates National Obesity Crisis,” Wil Haygood demonstrates how the dangers of obesity are rampant in small towns. Specifically, how their surroundings are contributing to the alarming obesity rate in this charming little town of Manchester. While Haygood depicts how the locals “celebrate the joys of community closeness,” he also reveals how “it is one of the unhealthiest places of all”. In fact, he points out that an estimated 52% of the 2,100 residents are considered obese, and that a majority of those are young children. To illustrate, Haygood cites a research study conducted in Manchester and surrounding counties by Jill Day, a local resident. The findings revealed that “Of the 277 [children surveyed], eight of those fourth- and fifth-graders were underweight, 135 were healthy, 49 were overweight, and 85 were obese”. In other words, he is indicating that roughly 48% of children are suffering from this obesity epidemic. Haygood suggests the problem originates from having too many fast food restaurants without enough healthy alternatives; paired with the fact that there are not enough locations that promote activity or exercise. For example, Manchester has at least 8 fast food restaurants as well as a Wal-Mart that sells mostly snack food. The only place for exercise is a physical therapy office. He also addresses the notion that obesity is more hereditary than anything else. He quickly refutes this argument by simply quoting Jill Day: “Since 1980, obesity has tripled in children, so we can’t totally blame genetics for this increase”. Overall, Haygood highlights that while being from a small town is comforting and favorable, it may be just as damaging and…

    Mansfield Reformatory

    • 699 Words
    • 3 Pages

The Mansfield Reformatory was built in the year 1886 and was originally built with intentions of humanely rehabilitating first-time offenders. The reformatory was initially applauded for creating a positive step forward for prison reform. It was later in 1978 that the reformatory’s legacy was one of abuse, torture, and murder. It had been denounced for “brutalizing and inhuman conditions”. Violence among inmates was an everyday way of life. Tales have been told of inmates being sliced by shanks, beaten by soap bars and even thrown from six-story high walk ways. These tragic deaths were all trigged from petty grievances. It has been told that on one occasion after a riot; approximately one hundred and twenty inmates had been confined for several days in “the hole” with only twenty rooms to hold these prisoners. One room consisted of a toilet and a bunk and was not spacious by any means. During this time at least one inmate had been murdered and hidden in the corner of the room under bedding material for the several days to follow. The “sweat box” was a special type of torture used on African American inmates and Caucasian prisons escaped this punishment. Along with the murders of countless prisoners, a prison farmer and his family, the warder and his wife also had died at the Mansfield Reformatory. After ninety-four years of operation, 154,000 inmates had passed through its gates as a working prison. Eventually in the year 1990 the Mansfield Reformatory was shut down.…

The age of Imperial Encounters marked a time period where cultures were connected and new perspectives were formed through exploration. No other explorer in this period of time caught the attention of the public as much as Mungo Park. Park’s travels represented not only exploration, but also imperialistic adventures, which he portrayed through his famed books and created a new perspective of the interior of Africa. Park, after growing up to be a physician, made two voyages to the interior of Africa where his experiences and encounters are well documented within his journals. Mungo Park’s adventures changed the view of African geography as well as commercial perspectives. His encounters, which led to his ultimate death, are still studied and relevant in modern culture.…
